    The approach

Trying to capture a dark mood, using colors picked from similarly lit photos. Looking to improve as much as possible. Any suggestions, tips, advice comments.

I like it, especially the muted tones. I would work on have the central object and the background in different focus. The eye works like a camera, and what you want it to concentration should be more sharply illustrated.

I want the main focus to be the smaller boat. So you think I should blur the foreground with the larger ship and the background a little? Maybe even increase the contrast a little on the main subject?? Great work by the way Dan and thanks for the input.

    updated progress

I used painter smudge tools to put the background and foreground out of focus and increased use of lighter values in order to step up the contrast in the main subject.
