New Painting... Eva Battle Walk. Last Image.

painter and decorator by day... 2D Artist by night... looking for any freelance work....

i have been working in my free time over the past few years developing my skills in games design and development. im now putting together a collection of the work i have created around a full, relatively detailed story arch that has slowly manifested over time.

im now begining the process of looking for work to gain knowledge and exprience as a 2D artist.

Please, any critique or advice would be dearly valuble...

Thank you for viewing my work, i hope there is something you like...

I like your ideas and working style, just maybe in background reduce not only lighting/contrast but saturation also to achieve greater sense of depth

    HI Dan,
The first thing that strikes me is that you have a knack for mechanical creatures which overall have a nice sense of function. I think you should have a look at sketch up - a straightforward 3d program which is free from google- this would help you with complex mechanical shapes and positioning. I would also suggest doing some study of real life landscapes as much to get a sense of lighting.
You've got the skills to improve and make it to where you want, just get used to knockbacks and just keep hammering away and working at it. it's a constant learning process and self improvement curve for everybody who works in concept anyway.
Oh the scarabs sweet as well !

Great work. First one kinda reminds me of Mass Effect. As for the woman in the blue coat, one of her nostrils looks larger than the other.

    Hey,

I can't tell you where you can get your work experience; but I can suggest some things nonetheless.

You could of course send your portfolio around to all game studios in your area/country and see what happens.
Other than that, there is a "job offer" section on this forum, there are maybe some local events that might want drawings you make
(such as local magazines, clubs, whatnot) .. this way you get working experience concepting stuff,
you keep buiding a portfolio and people might come across your name when they see your pictures published.

Other than that, keep on building your skillset.
Right now, it could use some upgrading on human anatomy and environments.
Your robotic creatures look good, although their poses are a little stiff.

I've read several times that the best is to be good at environments, characters, creatures, the lot.
That way, you can be put on any development team that might need that one guy that can draw whatnot.

    Good luck!

Well now that you got all the asspats out of th eway
You are going to need to raise the quality to get work in the industry. Right now this work would qualify as solid amateur work but not professional level.

    Things to work on

Atmosphere; your colors are over saturated and garish for your environments
Anatomy; needs lots of work in all aspects but especially facial expressions, hands and feet.
Lighting needs to be more realistic and believable.

Also if you want to do concept you need to provide turnarounds and plan views not just illustration type of scenes. If you don't know what those are I suggest you look them up to see what you need to do.

There are some nice concepts and idea behind your works! I especially like Number 8! It has a nice color tone and composition and is very clear. The quality is equal in every aspect!

Your first one on the other hand bothers me: The background is nicely textured, while the charakter is not, which makes her appear flat and especially the face too polished! Donīt ask me about anatomy - I am too bad at it myself
But my point is: find the right balance in the textures. The same with the peaces 2,3 and 4 which have potential, but loses a lot of depth due to this.

And your light is in some places too strong. For example the last one loses most of itīs intensity due to too strong colors and light! Try to desaturate the skin, to enhance the bloody aspect and play with graduation and tones.

But it is nontheless a good point to start! You just need to focus now on the right aspects
    Keep on rollinī

    I'm liking all the work

The creatures and monsters all seem as if they belong in their respective environments. Very good aspect of bleeding in the background. In the future i'd like to see more contrasts of color. a Three color combo is safe and stunning but not seductive. Still your work is good and I'm a few orders of magnitude less skilled.
