    NT's hodgepodge sketchbook thread!

Ok, this is time number three: I keep hiding in a hole and then come back to CA a year later (which is pretty ungracious, really).

Howdy! I'm a 21-year-old university student, so I'm a bit unfocused. A friend recently reminded me of how much I like illustration, so now I'm working on that again. No classes regarding illustration, though, so I absorb from other folks on the internet.

Any feedback is appreciated, as usual: critiques, redlining, diatribes, anecdotes, life stories, etc. Thanks for looking!

WIPs, old stuff, and a tattoo

As the title says, current WIPs and other things, including a plague doctor or two.

The first painting is a bit of a headache. The left side's the "blah" first pass, and the right side is the current "oh geeze what the hell" state. It got out of hand because a professor suggested to "think Gustav Klimt". Didn't really understand what he meant then, and obviously don't still... a bedazzled bird might be a little bit too much.

Um, I'm gonna try to fix that. (Help??) Over 'n' out!

    a face

After browsing the sketchbooks here and getting frustrated, I painted a face to console myself. Boy, sleepy.

Of a friend's character in a book he's writing. His eyes seem a bit off.

Hey! I've noticed on your digital works, your finished pieces tend to have a lot of obvious "brush" strokes and small, scratchy lines left that aren't quite necessary. I think that if you take the time to start with larger brushes/forms first and only use smaller brushes for the details, it could help you to have a more finished/polished look.

Thanks, Amarok! I'll do that. I tend to forget that working in Photoshop is as much painting as it is drawing...

Cleaning up of previous sketch. Neck looks a bit small, and he looks very plastic. Something to work on.
I was gonna do some speedpaints of foreign subjects like the outside world, full bodies, and full bodies in the outside world. But now I'm a bit tired. Hmm dmm

Good stuff! I actually don't mind the brushy lines on that head; they generally follow the planes of the face, and bring out the form a bit. (Okay, maybe a bigger brush would have looked nicer, but the actual lines look nice.) The gold and blue head does look a bit choppy, though. =) I really like the piece in your first post, it's got a great sense of mood and I love the texture.

@Rev - Haha, thanks a lot, and thanks for the tip. I've been working on expanding my brush horizons. There's so many...

Puttering around. Invasion of the LIFE game pegs. It's a bit line-y and blue. Hmm-dmm.

@Tides - Oh, you flatter me. Thanks!

Realized the other day that I am clueless regarding the anatomy of the face. Starting from the bones up, though a real model'd be nice. Ref photo from jimiyo.com--really high-res.

Hmm, things could be a bit rounder, chin's a bit off, and teeth. Hmm dmm

That skull study is fab, and thanks for sharing the ref link; those're great references.

    Resuscitation

Okay, one year later. I've gotta stop being a bad community member...

Anyway, easing back into illustrations and stuff. Working on contrast and information in the illustration, as well as making backgrounds less vague. hm...

    Thanks for looking!
