    Nicholas' Sketchbook

Hey guys i'm Nicholas and i'm 17 and this is my sketchbook and I will be updating almost everyday. I want to get out least ten sketches and drawings a day, I hope to get feedback on my drawings so that I can improve and learn from my mistakes. My main goal is to get into Sheridan and take the animation course, from this website I think I can accomplish a lot because of this thread because it will keep me on track and always drawing.

Here are some sketches that I had in my sketcbooks, the reason why some of them are blurry is because my computer scanner isn't big enough for my sketchbook and I dont want to take them out because I want to keep my sketchbook organized.

    6/7/11 Sketchbook update

Got some more drawings done today, I wanted to do more but I think my problem is working on value too much I think I should spend more time on the contour line and shape and form but i'm not too sure. I drew these while listening to my Dads record that he wanted me to convert into a cd the Muscian is "Julio Iglesias" hes ok But i'm more into metal and rock. Going on a tangent again... tomorrow ill post more drawings, Cheers.

Looking great so far, keep it up! Maybe you can work on value, contour line, shape, and form all at the same time? Do whatever you feel like doing just as long as you keep drawing. Mix it up.

    I'm interested in animation too!

    Sketchbook update 10/7/11

Wow my third sketchbook update! I haven't posted in 3 days so I feel really bad. I will make sure to keep posting daily and make sure I get my drawing group up and running. These are just some more hand studies and I plan to upload more throughout the week but tomorrow I think I will take the advice I was given to draw from life so tomorrow i'm off to the bus station and mall to go and draw people.

    Sketchbook update 16/7/11

These drawings are a couple of days old, but I did do some life drawing and I found it very fun and it was cool to just sit and draw people because everyone is so different. All of these are done at the bus station near my house and I also did a self portrait. i didn't feel like using the blending stump so I tried to go for a more hatched approach with a 2b pencil.

    Sketchbook update 26/7/11

Got some more drawings done I am not sure if what I was doing should be classified as figure drawing or gesture or both.

I am having some trouble with drawing in photoshop I have a wacom bamboo tablet and I am not sure if I should start training myself to use it or just keep continuing to draw traditionally from my sketchbook with an hb and 2h pencil. Or if I should do both but for digitally painting and drawing I have no idea where to start. If anybody is reading this please leave a comment on it.

I thought I should give the wacom bamboo pen and touch a try, I looked up some tutorials on how to blend and digitally paint. It is very hard getting all the colours to work but it is very fun and I want to do more but I think I will keep working on my figure studies before I start jumping the gun. So here are some apples that I did. I have a lot of work to do to get better at digital painting. Looking at all these artists on this website makes me sad because I am not as good as them. Thats my only problem with other artists if someone has better art then me that only makes me want to keep drawing until I surpass them. I guess thats what drives me to be a better artist and I have a long way to go if I want to get into Sheridans animation course.

In general its harder to draw with a tablet than a pencil or pen, so often its better to learn how to draw first in traditional way first. Also when drawing first try to keep it in greyscale so you get use to working in value then move to colour.

Try doing some muscle and skeletal excises, look at how they effect the surface; as well as lots of life drawing. Got to train yourself to think beyond the surface, know what effects what. IDK about other but when i look at people i start to see how their skeletal structure effects things and how their muscles move.

I do like your pencil drawings of fruit.

    Sketchbook update 9/8/11

Another sketchbook update and I am starting to choose my path for what I want to do for the rest of my life. I took a tour to Sheridan college and the tour guide was awsome, he talked about all the cool stuff of the school and was very funny. So the career I really want to get into is animation and make cartoons. One day it will happen but for now I draw.

cool sketchbook, I can see that you will get good quickly if you keep this up! If animation is the course you want to get into I would recommend going somewhere public and trying to capture people's movement and basic form as they go past or sit around near you. I find that really helps me to get believable movement into my drawings (although I'm not at all pro so that believably is always going to have it's bounds)

good luck, I'll race you to pro-dom

Thanks for the comment! I have been doing some observational drawing from sitting around at the bus stop drawing people. But I can't really find any life drawing courses in my area that are not $200 or up.

Matt dixons drawing bible helped out a lot because of the process he does hands in. I think its all just dividing the hand into rectangles and squares

    Sketchbook update

Update for today and I think I should try a different approach to my figure drawing other than more of a contour looking figure drawing.

Keep drawing, man! Every day if you have the time! If you want to go into animation, focusing on gestures and expressing movement is probably a good direction to go.

what i would personally do would be to try and bring your perspective drawings skills into your life drawings. might give it aneat new style!

Another update I think I might do this "put all drawings on one j peg" kind thing from now on it saves me time for my massive sketchbook updates. Also almost finished my blog on blogger.

Good start here, I like your hands but use boxes, I have a lot of hands at my SB.
Show me some more hands, for example only the fingers I want to see how you
    break them down.

If you get to tight than become more sketchy, your stuff look pretty tight use more
    the gesture.

Great collection of drawings so far!
What I suggest for the figure drawings of the body, is to let loose. Your lines are too sketchy and 'chicken-scratch' like in my opinion. Just use nice long strokes by using full arm movement instead of your fingers; even the wrist is fine too (:

    Keep it up ;D

    sketchbook update

Got a new sketchbook for christmas so that means I can draw a lot more now and here are some sketches I did in the past few days, I am really into Dan Hipp and Royal boiler from deviant art so I started studying on how they draw eyes and their styles.

You and I are in the same boat, I've also started my Sheridan portfolio far too late.

If you don't mind me giving a few pointers you should try a more structural approach to your pieces. I can see you doing a bit in some of your studies, but it would be good to push it further (it's very important in animation and the instructors love to see it in portfolios).

And in case you haven't already stumbled upon them, here's a few handy links:
    http://sheridanportfoliotips.blogspot.com/ <- amazing one
    http://alisongchan.blogspot.com/2011/03/process.html

    Best of luck!
