rumpenstiltzkin - Thanks, as I've said before, my rare traditional drawings are usually ballpoint, so they tend to have a similar look.

    sammfshields - Thanks a ton!

Gestures, different style than usual. (Drawing Script, mostly 60s.) Like I said yesterday, picked up Michael Hampton's book, and I'm gonna try just working through it. While I tend to think about the structure of gesture drawings, the final result tends to be more contour-y than anything, so this is a nice change.

Your gesture work is really fun and awesome! I like how your sketches from imagination are just as fluid and full of movement as your life studies.

Coyox - Thanks, it's easier to do fluid gestures from imagination after doing several dozen from ref, heh.

Psychobuddy - Thanks, a lot of that's down to the ref. =)

Another one of these, trying to get back into doing studies of things other than faces. Not super happy with this one, this is about the largest size I'm willing to post it at, any bigger and it looks increasingly dumb.

REF LINK (I hate using ref when I can't credit the source properly, but it's so hard to find good refs for these kinds of studies, blah.)

    Octic - Thanks a ton!

    Whirly
    - Thanks, still not brave enough to try them from imagination, though. The studies are kind of a struggle. D:

More Hampton-type gesture stuff. Going through this book is making me realize that I had absolutely no sense of how big a ribcage actually is.

Also, this. Drawn out the window of a restaurant, and is thus unfinished, as my friends had finished eating. Oh my god, this composition is awkward.

Ahhh I love what you've got going on in here! You're improving pretty quickly and no wonder. I love the gestures, the environments are looking good and there's a lot of life to your work. Keep up the fabulous work. c:

Sapphirelullaby - Thanks a ton! Good to hear there's some life to it, honestly I've been trying to loosen up, didn't like how stiff it was getting.

    merl1n - Thanks, I will!

I've been doing a lot of ballpoint sketchbook stuff lately. Probably a good thing?

PROTIP: If you have no easy access to lifedrawing, just creep on your friends while they're trying to nap! Do it often enough and they'll be completely desensitized.

Blaaaaah heads from imagination, they're kind of awful. I just need to do like 3 million more studies, but it's good to do these every once in a while to sort of check in on what I need to work on. Which is basically everything.

    Whine whine whine.

    so hey

remember when I was like "soon this thread will just be increasingly desperate attempts to paint Nathan Fillion"

    we're back on that now

Another Serenity screencap, this one took over an hour because there is something about Nathan Fillion's face that continually defeats me.

More, less-awful heads from imagination. I was planning to do another screencap study, but after looking through some to pick one, I decided I wanted to see if I could ape some of the cool lighting from memory - that's the left one. The right one is... a thing.

si3g - Thanks! Hey, who doesn't need to work on gestures?

kimozabbi - Are you in Canada? I think it was on CBC, don't remember. =D

Gpozzo - Thanks, I need to do more of those!

Finally starting on another actual picture. Spent most of the morning trying to figure out a comp. I think this is what I'm going with, but might clarify it more before posting in the critique section? It's probably still too rough to actually crit.

One of my favorite places to come to! Wee!

The screencap studies are always great. As far as Nathan Fillion's face defeating you, I know that feeling. Usually if I get too beat up about somebody's facial structure, I just open up a new comp in Photoshop, trace the damn thing, look at it for a while, then walk away. It's always in a desperate attempt of "YOU F@#$ING FACE I HATE YOU," but it always helps.

But likeness isn't everything, and your brushwork and colors are fabulous as usual.

PeopleEveryday - Aw, thanks. I've definitely resorted to tracing as a learning strategy before... I think my trouble with his particular face is something in the eye area. Even when I draw them correctly, I botch them at the paint step. =\

    comicbookfreak - Thanks a lot!

    Okay, so. Photostudy.

Aaaaand I'm trying to finally get over my... fear? I guess? ...of doing environment type stuff from imagination. It's still a sort of "where do I even start" feeling, but if I don't try to start applying some of this studied stuff, I won't get better.

So here's some super basic mountains from imagination. Can't get simpler than that. The funny part is, despite the fact I last watched it like a month ago, the influence of this Feng Zhu video is hilariously obvious. (It's a great video, BTW. His whole channel is just full of great stuff.)

    JustinBeckett - Thank you!

kimozabbi - He hasn't posted in a while, but he does still update sometimes. And man, the old ones are always worth rewatching.

    Luk999 - Thanks, I'll keep at it!

Having a Bad Art Day. Spent like an hour on a picture so bad I'm not even going to post it here, and then did this study, which... there's some things I like about it (clouds!), but the foreground is a /mess/. I have some ideas on how I'd handle it if I had more time, but I have no idea how the hell to approach it from a speedpainting perspective.

Those environments are looking great. For some reason i liked the first post of the screen cap portraits. The raw strokes and minute hatching (the right one) makes it look good. The gestures are really inspiring as usual. you get the poses so well. Keep up the good work!

I actually like this latest environment but you could improve it maybe by creating more subtle changes in tone & hue. The mountains are beautiful if you ask me
