    CHow#251 :: Steampunk Coppélia

Design a steampunk, dancing doll from the Ballet Coppélia
    DEADLINE: SUNDAY, July 10th 2011
Deadline is Sunday, at 9:00 pm (GMT+1) Check your timezone!
    DESCRIPTION
Coppélia was a lifesize, dancing doll created by a mad inventor to be his companion. She was so beautiful and perfect that many people thought she was a real person and fell madly in love with her. The inventor loved her so much that he tried to perform a magic ritual to bring her to life by stealing the lifeforce of another person. This weeks challenge is to create a design for this perfect lifesize doll but with a twist;- we would like you to create a steampunk based design with lots of steam and brass and pseudo-victorian mad science! The illustration of the piece is just as important as the development of the character so plan your image carefully! As always, images which are not well developed will not make it to the poll!

    Things to remember:
    • Think about the inllustration of the piece But do not forget the character design!
    • Although the original Coppélia was female, you are free to make them either Male OR female.
    • Try to make the design interesting and think about all the amazing machinery you could create in the steampunk style.
    • The story is a mix of science, magic and love so try to include it in your design.

:3 This sounds awesome! Hopefully I wont mess up the deadline this week! XD also, the Dreamweaver didn't HAVE to be a girl. Does the Character have to be story accurate or just have to follow the basic premise of a steampunk dancing doll?

My first ChoW. I've been lurking for quite some time and actually started on a couple of ChoWs recently but didn't finish or post anything. So posting this now to force me to finish it this time .

Please check if it's correct (I think anybody can modify it so watch out).

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page you should notice a little caption saying (for example) 'All times are GMT -4. The time now is 2:03AM'
Since the Chow deadline is set at GMT+1 add that to your timezone (excluding + and -, they indicate whether it is to move forward or backward) and adjust the time according to that number. For me it's GMT -4 so for me the deadline is 5 hours behind. 4pm instead of 9pm. Hopefully that helps people with deadline issues.

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!

Yeah, sorry your cute Dreamweaver came up one time slot too late

Those time offsets can be confusing. In email headers they read inversely - the shift to UTC, not from UTC. Doh

I failed to finish my Steampunk Aphrodite in time, I hope I can make up for that with Coppélia. I think I'll try a mix of steampunk and modern.

Partisan Last week's image wasn't gender specific and neither is this weeks. But seeing as you asked so sweetly, I'll see what I can do for you next week

Nikkatzu You may have to 'define' what you mean by story accurate. It has to be a doll. It has to be attractive. It have to be able to dance (So think about joints and flexibility) and it has to be steampunk. Really the rest is up to you.

I've been terrible lately about getting ideas and never doing anything with them, so I'm making a commitment to finish this CHOW. Besides its finals week and I should have more free time.

Heres my obviously rough wip for the robotic dancer

Would appreciate any feedback I could get

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the
mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all
science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who
can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.

This sounds awesome, I might do some more research than I usually do to get some believable industrial design things going on. My knowledge in this sort of area is pretty non-existent

this my 1st CHoW! so here it is, my idea is to make the character more mysterious. A top light, the mad inventor cover in the shadow on her back.

    Ideas

Coming up with idea. Am going for a contortionist style of dancing. I figured she's not human and is therefore capable if more extreme flexes and twists.

This seems like a really fun topic but, with all due respect, Steampunk again? I appreciate all the crazy hard work that goes into planning these CHOW's, but I think we're beating a dead horse when it comes to Steampunk.

here is my first wip. My concept is that the mad inventor is actually Jack the Ripper and is killing women to harvest the life force he needs for the doll. The Doll it self has elements of industrial revolution looms within the design, with thread being weaved through the body.

It's ok. 2 cents very much appreciated . It was just that the last steampunk specific topic was Aphrodite back in feb and that was before Par and I took over. I didn't think it felt like it had been every other topic.... But never the less, more diversity noted...

I think it's probably really hard to come up with interesting ideas for the chow every week, and not everybody is going to like every topic. I completely missed the steampunk aphrodite chow- I don't think I've ever gotten to participate in a steampunk themed chow- so I'm super excited for this one!!
