You definitely have potential. What you lack is patience. You bring your stuff to a solid mid way, where you have all the tones and hues down but then it seems like you don`t know where to put your focal points. Remember, not every part of the image has to be rendered to the fullest. Things that are close to the viewer have to be more clear, the stuff in the far background don`t. Same thing with the character designs. Try avoiding those harsh strong lines. If you plan to render it, than you have to realize that the darker your outline gets, the harder will be for you to get rid of the flat look (result of having such a strong outline). Try using harder pencils (HB, F, 2H, H) to define shapes, anatomy and design elements and then slowly progress from light to dark values (or the other way around, depends what suits you). Keep it up!

Hey 8ball, you have one good sketchbook building up here. I really like those ship designs you did further up. I gotta try out more of those Robertson studies.

Also how long do you usually spend on a speedpainting? I try to do them with in a hour but I always get caught up in details. Any tips on speedpainting in general that may help me out? Like for example do you lay down a grid before starting?

Great images anyway, looking forward to some more posts.

Always looking for feedback, so feel free to stop by any of these, cheers.

WOW! You're just as old as me ...and i guess i really have to improve a lot to catch up with your skills.

Your environments are waay better than the stuff i can do.

And the second mech designs on post #7 just kicks some serious ass ...

I definately will follow this thread! Keep up the amazing work man!

Riox: thanks man, and yeah i highly recommend studying scott robertson's work. as for speedpainting, try not to think of it in terms of "time." speedpainting is all about accuracy, correct structure, and values. it's a lot more useful to paint slowly, but accurately, rather than haphazardly scribbling strokes within a 1 hour timeframe. and i'm not sure what you mean by a grid. i lay down perspective guidelines about halfway through the painting just to check if my VPs are correct. i don't start with perspective grids laid out though, as it tends to tighten up/restrict the painting process. hope that helps!

Elophant: thanks man, glad you like it. it wouldn't be hard to catch up to me though. you should aim for craig mullins or something

    _______

been doing a lot of stuff from imagination lately, so instead, here's some studies!

    isaak levitan study:

pencil studies from scott robertson's hovercraft dvd. not worried about the designs themselves as much as learning his actual drawing process and methods of construction.

and some halftone sketchbook stuff, all from life. sorry for the shitty scans good way to meet girls though...

Your stuff looks really solid. (Probably already told you that) You seem to have mastered perspective. Well done

Looking pretty good here. Especially those perspective drawings are nice. I'd suggest you start using more references to improve your designs. Also, try pushing some stuff to finish.

Wow, you're productive... Good speedpaints and confident brush strokes! The Robertson studies look really well constructed and the lines look fluid. You seem to be able to establish some good moods with colors already but doing more color studies from photos, films or life always helps. Keep up pushing yourself!

I really like your pencil studies, but your painted stuff could use a bit more refinement. By the way, I would also like for you to do some stuff with physical colors. (Colored Pencil, Markers, Paint, and Pastel.)
