Getting there. ^^ I love your head studies; they're full of life and expression.. I'm struggling with portrait style stuff like that right now..

I can relate on speed. I feel slower than molasses in January most of the time. XD

Please, help me improve by visiting my sketchbook and kicking me in the ass! ^_^

    Hi
God yeah, it just feels like I can stare at something for hours and not actually get any closer to a likeness. Swear it even gets worse sometimes... :/
That's kinda the idea of these timed studies though, hopefully I can start to get a workflow established, then when I go to do some longer work, it'll help. I have no idea lol.

Anyway, here's that study at the 2hr mark.

Today's 2 hours study. Focussed on getting the lines down on this one, but my colour matching was so so awful. Didn't really know where to go one I started laying the colour down. =/
    That happens quite a lot..

Today's!! Kinda happy with how the hat turned out. I was stumped by the dog. Hair's something that I always struggle with, so didn't really have a clue.
    Any pointers?
    Cheers : )

    Ooh, cute doggy. ^^

Looks pretty good to me, I like how you simplified the hair patterns. Hair is definitely one of those things I still need to work on, so if you get it figured before me, clue me in would ya?

I like the metal rings in the hat, they read nicely. Only thing I can say is just push to define more, because overall the form reads well! ^^

Please, help me improve by visiting my sketchbook and kicking me in the ass! ^_^

You are making steady progres. nice hand studies!

as for the dog, get the proportions, structure and values down.
with good values you dont want to paint each strand of hair individually,
but rather suggest, or imply that there is alot of hair. (you obviously allready know not to draw in each little strand..)

the skills for simplefying and implying things with few brushstrokes comes with practice.

xerenity - Ha, yeah I thought the dog was pretty cool. Was just browsing online, saw it, and thought "why not?". Cheers though, definitely need to work on hair. Guess its all about suggestion. We'll see

Lumens - Yeah, I kinda knew that was the idea, but haven't really had the practice and the time to implement it. Sure as I work more it'll come. Feel like I'm sorta improving. If only in using the tablet more confidently atm. Need to start thinking much more actively about brushwork.

    Thanks guys!

    Crappy wine study for today:

    Right, so it turns out:
    -I can't draw
    -I can't match colours
    -I can't get edges
    -And I can't blend.

    Super..

Anyway, Self portrait for today. Ouch. x|

Meh, not so bad. Seems like from a construction standpoint, your jaw could angle down and stick out a bit more. It feels like the proportions are correct for the most part. Just keep whacking away at it.

Edit: I should add, your ability to achieve likenesses is faaar better than my own.

Don't try to convince yourself you have to start off with color, you don't. There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting with a line drawing, it gives you a good foundation for the block in. No matter how good your color decisions are, it won't look good if the proportions are off. Keep up the studies, the wall looks really good and there is obvious improvement going on here, just don't expect too much at once and have fun, you will get there if you keep it up

Xerenity - Yeah looking back at it, think you're right, I'll leave it for now. Maybe try and work a self portrait once a week in alongside my other studies, try and track improvement (and ageing) . Cheers though : )

Cranberry - Cheers for dropping by, really appreciate it. Yeah, I don't really know why I did that, guess I'd seen it and tried to do it myself. Started with a line for this one, not sure if its better, or worse though tbh.. Any ideas? Ha yeah, I'm gonna keep going. I'm sort of into the rhythm of 2 hours a day. Gonna try and add a bit more in, probably next week, and just keep adding more time until I literally run out.
    So. Much. Coffee!

    Tadaaaa...
    Shit.

Mildly better than the girl at the top of the page, seriously not impressed though. I'm gonna do some studies of really basic shapes, mirrors, boxes etc, just to focus on my brush work, and edges etc.
Because atm I just don't know what to do with with blending or anything.

Just gonna try and get really comfortable with the tablet for the rest of the month (studying shapes then portraits and full bodies), then launch myself head first into personal work. Studies from then on will be way more focused to whatever I'm working on at the time.
Gonna take a crack at the ChOW as well I think

Study for today. Was browsing online for a photo of an apple to paint, then figured:
"I could totally just buy an apple"

So here it is, from life. Ahhh.
So hard. But got me working on hard vs soft edges, colour matching. Literally everything I wanna work on.
Gonna do a few more of these.

Anyone got any tips on edges btw?

nice going dude, you should work more on values on your figures, but idk if you had time for that. i spent a lot of time doing only line work, but it doesnt teach you as much as value, since it teaches you only the outline, not the actual shape. here are my 2 cents

Haha, I love that dog study (you forgot to color the nose )

I see big progress from the top of this page to the bottom, but I'm also surprised that it took you 30 minutes to draw the outline of that girl with a balloon gum?

So, apologies for the absence. Been bogged down beyond belief with uni work. As some of you may, or may not know, I started a degree in Graphic Design this year, and the deadline for this term's work was on Friday. So last week was lots of late nights getting everything done.
Gonna keep my graphics stuff and my painting separate for the most part, but it is all online, in a different corner of the web so if you do fancy checking it out...

Click me click me click me.

However, now that's handed in, I have literally all of December free. So, back on the deathline. I am gonna stick to it. Starting to actively feel guilty when I'm not drawing (typing this out is taking a little bit too long anyway )

So, this month, here's the plan:
    30 digital studies:
    25 x 2 hours
    5 x 4 hours

    300 pencil studies:
    100 faces
    100 hands
    100 full bodies

    Imagination work:
    20 faces
    20 hands
    20 full bodies

    Sorry, I'm rambling
TL;DR - Not painted because of a uni deadline. Gonna work my tits off through december, and click HERE to see the Graphic Design shit that's kept me busy recently. Loves.

Aragah - Yeah, definitely need to work on my values. That's kind of been an after thought in the life drawing so far. Feel like I'm out of my depth a bit with everything tbh. Its a bit hard to know where to start I guess. Life drawing's finished for this term (been doing it at uni) but I'll be back on it in the new year. Might try charcoal (scaaaary).

ANtY93 - Cheers . Yeah, I know. I just don't have a process down, like sometimes it'll all go really well, and sometimes I have no idea what I'm doing, and it turns out like shit. (see this one lol)

Unless anyone's hugely interested, gonna stop posting the process shots. Seems like I'm just milking what I've done, after looking back (that wasn't the intention, honest)

So, 2 hour study for today.
From life again, so so so awful. EURGH.
