    Lith's Obession

Hi all! I am a newb to the site. I'm a classically trained convert to digital art (since the end of 09). Now that I know my way around the painting technique in photoshop I am trying to inject some artistry into my work and break away from being a copy machine. I feel like Illustration suits me better than concept design but I've been doing a bit of everything.

I've only been serious about illustration for a couple of months mind you, but I'm hooked for good.

Some old sketches (most from life- last from ref)

Hey, Lithriel. Great to see a sketchbook from you. I like your dragon but those life studies are lovely. Really like what you do with light and shade, and your digital pieces are very cool indeedy.

I'll be subscribing to this thread for inspiration and to see more of your work.

I like the works, very nice. I think the poses are very strong, and the rendering skills you show are impresive. P.S. you were never a copy machine, personality shows through even when you are hideing it

    Update- Forced Serenity

Hi everyone! Let me just say, thank you for the warm welcome. I haven't replied yet because I didn't have any art to update with. I've been sketching in my sketchbook but I don't have the time to take pictures right now. I will try and get some of those up next round.

It's good to see you LA-Fairy, and Stryno, thanks for the comment. Oma, I converted to digital because I love it. Drawing from life is fun, but it's really just a way to hone my skills. I find that I love the digital look and I am able to capture more colors easily and finer details and subtleties that are lost when I work traditionally. Also, it's easier to fix mistakes and now that I am working full time as a freelance artist that is a plus.

For now here is a quick speed-paint I did that I could use some input on (6 hours, everything painted by hand of course). I wanted to do something different and practice softer edges. Now that I have gotten it to this stage, I want to take it further and make it a full on illustration. I was thinking of giving her some sort of bionic ship on the side of her head or perhaps adding wires.

I have to admit I was a little sad, I posted this somewhere else and got tons of "Oh it looks just like Natalie Portman". *Shakes head* I never used celebrities for facial reference nor was it ever meant to look like anyone specific. It's a generic frontal female face from loose reference-link I'm hoping once I add more elements to the picture I will get less of those types of comments.

Anyway, I would love some critic. I really want to take it to the next level. Feedback is much appreciated!

Freakin amazing! It's beautiful. I think you've done a great job working from that reference.

I hate those type of comments. I personally think they're just dumb. To be blinded to the atmosphere, emotional quality of a piece and only register a celebrity... I don't know what is wrong with people who think that way but something is wrong. I can see why that would make you sad. It would make me sad too.

Anyway, congrats! It is beautiful. I actually think this is pretty much done. There is nothing I can suggest to improve, except maybe it might look better with more gadgets or details as you mentioned you were going to do. I love the color, the facial expression and I think being able to do that from that reference shows incredible talent.

I realize I haven't posted in like months. I've been super busy with commercial jobs (yay! I am working as an illustrator full time now!)

This is where I got with the green portrait thing. I am still open ideas about the implant. I also think I need some sort of variance in the structure of her head on the alien side. Perhaps some bony spikes or ridges in her skin and shoulder. What do you guys think?

And here is a book cover I did recently of which I was unable to get any CC on during the process it's creation. Please feel free to comment on how I could have made it better. I did it all, text and everything.

And here's the interior illustration. I've done better work before, but this is my first full action scene attempt. Please crit me as I know it could use some love. Again, it's already been published but I may spruce it up for my portfolio.

    Thanks!

wow. Just wow. The stuff you do here is amazing. The cover seems perfect to me. The girl in the action scene could have a more anguished look on her face. But it's awesome!

    Awesome!

One thing I think you could use some practice on is expression - a lot of these faces look kind of 'meh', which is an easy trap if you're using references with bland expression.

Especially the mouths are kinda sleepy, even on the people in crazy dangerous/exciting situations. Keep up the great work.

Stunning work here. It's obvious you have a great understanding of lighting and anatomy based on your paintings. Keep it up!
