    Gstars' Miscellania

    'Lo all
Ive been applying for an illustration course this year so would like to get a bit of portfolio advice.
Ive been out of education for a while and currently work in very non arty fields so Im interested in any feedback; constructive,
amusingly abusive or otherwise. Not sure of potential career path as of yet, possibly crpgs (computer role playing games).
    Cheers,
    Gstar

there are a couple of things you can work on immediately:

    1) understanding how light falls on objects is especially important when trying to convincingly depict form... it works to some effect in the pic with eagle and the sunset and the B&W piece at the end, but your other pieces seem to have large, flat planes of color that are not convincing to the eye. Work on understanding shifts in value as light changes in intensity, direction, etc. USE REFERENCE to understand this better.

2)Since your trouble seems to be depicting form, try painting in just gray values (grayscale) and really try to understand how even simple forms exist in our visible reality... like painting a cardboard cube, a ball, or if you are feeling adventurous, a face or some other complex form, FROM REFERENCE. Try to "paint in the round", which means paying attention to how forms and light (the very thing that gives form, form) change as they recede in space, come forward, etc.

    good luck

    Round 2

Thanks for the advice Lordgemma, thats the sort of thing Im after. I completely agree- all these pieces are effectively just sketches that have been flash filled. Its quite easy to impress yourself when you havent got anyone else to point out the obvious!

A few more, a little less fantasy-
