    Sketches of Midnight

Anyone reading this thanks for dropping by, and feel free to comment!

Like many others here my ideal is to become a concept artist/character creator. Using clay, 3D programs or drawing doesnít matter to me as all i want to do is create creatures, people, worlds, machines, basically anything that I can create and make in some way. I want help others be as immersed as I am in watching films and playing games by laying the artistic foundations. Itís a long road ahead and I have only just decided what I want out of life, so in this sketchbook Iím going to train so i can become good enough to show the images and ideas in my head to the world.

Iíd say Iím a complete novice and all help & crits are appreciated!

Haha, I'm quite the beginner myself, here's to getting better!

I like how you're getting along with your studies, the contour lines on the arms/hand are especially nice. Do you have any books? If not, I'd recommend anything from Loomis (you can find his stuff online). It's great for beginners, and was recommended to me as well.

Although your anatomy sketches are very nice, I'd personally say to go back to do some simpler stuff. Find a ball or any cube-like structure around your house and put it next to a lamp. Draw/shade in what you see, and try to understand what causes the shapes and how light behaves on it. If it helps, do some line on the ball as you also did with the arms. These can help tremendously, as after you have a firm grasp of these more simplier shapes, they can help you build a more 3-d model of the human body (or anything really) out of it.

Can't wait to see more of your stuff! Definitely going to follow your thread c:

    somthing

Hey, thanks for looking in at my stuff. Iíve been working through Loomis fun with the pencil, really enjoying it.

Iíll spend some time working on shapes then, thanks. Iíve been neglecting drawing from life as i find it easier to draw whatís in my head or in front of me on paper, but i guess hiding from it wonít help

And a quick sketch as i donít want any wasted posts

Your feet and hands look great. I'd recommend zooming in on other parts of the torso in the same way and really trying to get all the little details down. Don't worry if you spend an hour drawing an areola, that's art!

    Gestures/ posemaniacs

Seem like gestures and posemaniacs kick my ass. I think i need to be looser with them.

Sorry for the image lines, had to adjust the levels in Photoshop as my scanner didnít pick up the lines to well.

Some new studies and an image that i came up with.

Feel free to critique it to pieces

I can see improvement, and you're very prolific. The more, the better! What I'm wondering though, after seeing these pages, is if you set up guidelines when you draw your figures, or are you just drawing the outlines? I'd recommend doing some speed sketches with only straight and slightly curved lines representing the most basic structure.

I've been doing the very thing I've suggested and my most recent post in my sketchbook has a couple of pages of 10 and 30 second stick figure sketches where I was really trying to capture the essence of the position that the model was in.

I hope I as able to help!

Pretty decent stuff so far! Although your poses are stiff. Do more gestures and make them more fluid.

    hands and thanks

Been feeling fatigue over the last two days, so only one page hand studies

    @Telephonoscope

    Thanks for stopping by again

Yeah i do use guidelines for the figures, i usually just delete them when i resize the images in Photoshop, which i guess i shouldnít to as they show my process.
I really need to work on my gestures. i find it harder than anything else Iíve done so far, But ill press on.

    @cannibalcarnivale

Thanks for looking over my stuff, and for the advice. I hadnít even thought about the figures looking stiff, but now youíve said it i can see it, so much appreciated!

    gestures and things

Some more gesture work and some studied poses. I think the problem Iím having with gesture work is that i canít see how to draw in 3D properly yet.

    drawing

Some more bits. My eye for scaling seems bad as i end up cutting bits of my sketches off, need to work on that.
Also donít think Iím working enough. Think Iím going to try and get an 80 page sketch pad filled a week.

Looking good so far, keep it up! I like your idea about filling up a 80 page sketchbook a week. I made it a goal to do one of month but it is a lot harder than it seems. XD

    stuff

Really small amount of work, hay fever has been slapping me around. Not a good reason not to draw though. The rain has relived the pressure in my head though. So on we go!

You are off to a really good start. I think your best works are the foot studies at #15. If I may make one suggestion, it would be to work with basic shapes of the human form rather than just doing outlines...like this:

    sketchy sketch

@bish0p2004 Thanks for the advice, Iíll work on it.
I need to sit down and actually study something, instead of just random sketches. My best works as you say are the only pieces i sat down at a desk and studied.
