Here's a new photo ref study I did; this time in color as I think it's my weakest area...especially when I work from memory. This one took longer than usual due to the fact that I had to work overtime last week.

While it's not really finished...I could have spent more time cleaning it up (mainly the hands and some other issues), but I figure it's good enough at this point to post, so I'm calling it done for now. Feedback welcome.

Here are a couple of studies from the past couple of days, and a rough draft I did at work today.

It's an executioner type character that I want to redraw in Photoshop and paint. I want to use some references on the body so it's a little more accurate (I had trouble with the arm turned inwards and had to use a mirror...but I'm not quite that muscular ) and I think he will have some type of pants on rather than the long dress type clothing.

Also, I know it's just a quick sketch, but suggestions and feedback would be appreciated. I can see the hands are messed up as well and doesn't really look like they're grasping the axe...and the position of the axe metal is not right either.

Picture quality is horrible as usual because I don't have money for a decent camera.

Thanks for looking, creeptool. Usually what I do to reduce the size of my drawings is change the image size in Photoshop to something smaller...never going above 5 inches.

I'm not sure if you did your drawings in photoshop though and I'm pretty bad with scanners too.

solid studies bishop, I definitely think that photo study is top notch. looking at your digital paints from imagination on page one, i'd say pull back on the high contrast a little. keep it rollin.

That study in #23 is amazing. Great gob on the values. Only the left arm looks a little strange around the wrist. Keep up the good work

And that colored study is great too. How long did you work on that one?

I am blown away by that last photo study. I agree with you on the hands, that would have been my only criticism. You're obviously on top of it, though, so keep it up!

Hey, thanks for the comments, guys...I was actually about to give up on this thread and just post in the critiques section because I wasn't getting enough critiques in here haha

@Little-Maiden: I can't remember where I found that particular photo ref, but I think I downloaded most of the pics from the site I got it from and can send you the pictures when I get home. Normally, I just use google images and type in random things like, female portraits, photography, female faces and so on. I just try to look for good images with good shadows.

    @Tides: Thank you!

@Vaejoun: Yeah, I think I got a little restless with the arms, but I'll work on them more. I can't remember how long the color study took...probably around 10 hours....more or less.

@GHudston: Thank you for the compliment and feedback. Even though I rushed the hand, you noticing that it was rushed gives me incentive to spend more time on things like that.

    Those are some great studies!

My only critique is that your executioner seems a bit stiff. Having said that, the detail on him is amazing, great work!

I originally posted this in the critique section, but I wanted to update my sketchbook as well. I have been drawing and painting everyday, just nothing to really show for it other than this still life.

My subject matter was moved around quite a bit and as my room is very small, I just kind of gave up when the cloth got tangled in my pants as I was passing by.

I'm still not spending as much time as I want to on a piece. The biggest issues in the picture (based on critiques I received) are the bottle being skewed and the cloth not looking good. I will definitely spend more time on these next time and just work on cloth still lifes.

Thanks, Umbravita. I am working on the stiffness of my characters, but I guess it's only going to be solved when I go I take some figure drawing classes next year.

Also, I lied...here is another picture that is really in it's early stages. Figures are still stiff, but I'm changing the entire composition of it and doing a bunch of thumbnails instead of jumping right into the picture. I know a lot of the anatomy is off as well. Also, I want it to be more dynamic as I've always drawn pictures that don't really put the viewer in the scene.

Doing thumbnails before a pic is actually pretty fun, and it can show you problems before you even start.

I love the composition of the above. I can't wait to see how it develops.

Thanks, again Umbravita. I like the composition of this as well...but, I'm just going to keep brainstorming until I can find a balance between this and something more dynamic. I already have a few ideas that I've sketched out already.

Please send some. I believe its possible to attach a few to a PM if not i'll send you my e-mail. i'd love a few pics to add to my own little collection of photos i've got going. Google images seems to work wonders as well as a bane sometimes. I usually type with safe-search off cause you miss alot of good stuff with it on even at low- ofc you have to sift between the mountains of porn for one good ref pic.

Nonetheless, thanks for stopping by my SB, your comment certainly hit the mark on what was wrong with my last image. Cheers. It hasn't been long since i left my last comment here. Nonetheless I can't really give you much advice regarding your work since its still ahead of what I'm producing. . Nonetheless with the last image here, I think your figures are stiff due to the placement of feet much more than the rest I think. Also you're gonna need to exaggerate the grip the orc has on the guy's chest armour, right now I don't think its really showing the full effect of the gravity and the direction the human is falling in. Apart from that, would like to see it finished.

@Little-Maiden: Sent you a PM and thanks for the feedback.

Here are some sketches from my real sketchbook. I've been trying to slow down a bit and take my time. I feel like I'm making progress with my sketching and my hand is becoming confident again, but things are still not as refined as I want them to be.

Here is one I started yesterday and am currently working on. I originally began this when I was playing around with facial expressions in my sketchbook and I wanted sort of an arrogant, snobbish aristocrat type character. Also, I wanted something a bit humorous.

The boxing idea came later and as such, I think the boxer on the left doesn't seem as interesting and the entire composition is not coming together as well as I'd hope (I didn't do thumbnails). I really like the referees' expression and the taller boxers face.

I think the boxer's face on the left is coming out really good so far, but that's because I'm getting caught up in a reference I found after getting the idea down. As such, I don't think his body has the same quality because I was trying to stop copying the lighting in the photo.

Decided to get a study in (taking a break from the boxing pick) before I go to sleep (it's 2:30am here), and it's not finished yet. So far, I've spent around 4 hours on it.

I'm having the most trouble with the lips and my brush strokes. The lips are a constant problem for me as they look pink, but have some flesh tone in there. Also, in the photos they have this intense pink on some spots...like a hot pink and I can't figure it out. With the brush strokes, it's difficult to get a nice stroke. I don't want it to look airbrushed, and I want to see some strokes to give it that painterly feel, but I guess that will take time and practice.

    Anyways, I'll finish it tomorrow.

Calling this one finished even though I didn't refine it as much as I would have liked.

My attempt was to work on my brush strokes and skin tones. I really wanted my strokes to be more consistent, but I can see a lot more errors on here now that I've posted it.

mrd33ds: Thank you for checking out my sketchbook!

Here is a quickie that I did today. I haven't done a landscape in a while and I would like to spend more time on these as I rush them quite a bit. I'm want to balance them between my anatomy studies though, which makes it a little difficult unless I do a quick landscape.

I would also like to paint from life rather than photographs, but I haven't picked up any paints or canvas yet. Eventually I will though.
