Time for serious improvement - Come see my progression ! - UPDATE 06/14/11

    Hello everyone!

I'd like to welcome you to my sketchbook.

So the story is, I've been drawing a long time and have had interest in drawing since 3-4 years old. Like many others on conceptart.org, I have been looking at quite a few sketchbooks over the past couple of years, and seeing the improvement people have made on this community is quite simply amazing.

Despite all the other times I was going to start a sketchbook, I never did, but now my deadlines have finished, I thought that this is definitely the time to seriously improve.

Its only been a couple of years since I've realised I want to be a concept artist and persue it as a career.

I aim to post chunks of studies, ranging from anatomy, character concepts, environment concepts and self portraits at least once a week!

Anyway I'm going to start by showing quite a lot of paintings/studies which I produced in the past 6 months or so, just to let you see what I've been up to, and also to see future improvements (hopefully bwahaha) since earlier work.

Crits are very welcome, I just want to get better!

    Beginning

Here a few concepts, studies, portraits; some being more serious than others. All these pieces were sketched in a little A6 sketchbook around half a year ago, no reference was used apart from the life drawing of my hand and the byro sketch of a friend.

I know that there are many errors and mistakes within these drawings, I have got a little better since then I think, but hey critiques are warmly welcome, and any knowledge passed down into information/critiques, I can learn from!

Thought I might dig up some pieces I produced for my foundation diploma in art and design, was kinda hard to fit the sort of illustrative pieces I wanted to do in, especially conceptual art found in games or films, but I managed to do it and fit it into the briefs anyway! Was a bit annoying but it worked out all okay.

This was a little narrative I made for a college project:

A character I designed for my portfolio, this was done with a mouse...lol, took me so...so long to do.

    Some self portraits

    Hey, another update again!

These are a few self portraits from life I have compiled over the past 6 months. I've used a mirror for each one. First one is an old life drawing of a friend.

    Object life drawing

This be a painting I done around 4 months ago in my room back at home, approximately an hour or so

Time for serious improvement - Come see my progression ! - UPDATE 06/14/11

This was the very first digital life drawing I’ve ever done, was quite recent. It took me about 5-8 hours, I can't remember exactly.
I wanted to make small intricate detail corrections on the course of drawing this, one of the areas I really need to improve on is rendering faster, getting block details out rather than the smaller ones whilst making it resemble the object in real life as much as possible.

This is a good queue for me explaining my problem with drawing, mainly digital. I tend to get carried away, and really focus on small intricate details, and spend a hell of a lot more time on pieces than I need to! This could have been done in half the time I reccon...but hey, its something I definitely need to improve on!

Time for serious improvement - Come see my progression ! - UPDATE 06/14/11

The second digital life drawing; this was very difficult for me to draw. Glass was now my number one enemy to draw...lol. This took me around the same time as the Wrench, again I could have done this in half the time, damn myself!

    Life drawing with people

A few examples of my life drawing, I really didn’t go to enough life drawing lessons in my first year, thats bad I know, but I will make sure to do as much as I can this upcoming year, its totally vital to any concept artist or illustrator.
There were a few more, but they were too crap to show, was real rusty, but these I was warmed up for

A few old character and environment concepts, some newer, some not. At points I was drawing every day a week here and there.

The only reference I used for all of these were for the happy looking Santa, and that was for his face, hehe. Everything else is from imagination

I've put all of these in the order that I painted them, all of these were done on the course of the past 6 months or so.

This was an attempt at starting to use thumbnails, haven't developed any of these yet though.

Time for serious improvement - Come see my progression ! - UPDATE 06/14/11

The final render took me about 6 hours, again, too long! I suppose one of the reasons for taking long is to emulate metal as good as I could without reference, are these exercises of using no references holding me back? I suppose I need to start using a lot more reference and studying the human figure, rather than test myself with each time with just a little tiny bit more knowledge on anatomy and form...Seems pointless? I don't know, what do you guys think??

I made use of reference for the face in the end

This is pretty poo I must admitt , took me about an hour, but as for the idea I don't think its as bad as how its been rendered and drawn poorly ha.

    Would you look at that

Some head/face studies, past 6 months. Starting with the oldest, around half a year ago, maybe more, no reference used apart from the lady posing:

    Excellent stuff!

You have a much better sense of color and values than i do.

I especially like the portraits, the starcraftesque armored soldier, and the spiderman.

Another update with anatomy in mind

Thank you! All it takes is practice and more practice!

I've always tried to draw from imagination as much as I could, but I think those days of testing myself to see how good I can produce unreferenced work are over...I suppose it was more of a personal goal/challenge.

But now I really need to start referencing a lot more and copy studies ranging from master studies to google images of faces? And then do a lot more anatomy and posemaniac studying.

Anyone else got crits for my work? I'll return the favours to the best of my ability

    Here's some recent-ish anatomy studies:

A bit of anatomy studying with Loomis and my imagination. Some of these pages in my sketchbook are just quick mashups of different angles of faces or postures.

I will start to post some posemaniacs studies very soon as well, heard its great for doing 10-60 second studies which change with a time limit, that will surely sink anatomy, posture and generally the way how body moves/appears a bit more I hope!

Hey man, you're right I'm the tall dude, we met in life drawing classes, didn't we? It's good to see you here, the more of us the better. I see you haven't been lazying about recently, got quite a bit of promising stuff here.
http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php use this instead of posemaniacs (posemaniacs is shit compared to this website )
When you paint digitally try to keep high opacity around 70%+ then you'll prevent muddy values.

Been up tonight drawing 30-60 second posemaniac postures, will scan and post them later.

For now, I painted another self portrait. I really wanted to get the colour values right this time. Excuse the headband, I guess it was a real workout, wouldn't wanna be sweating everywhere on my face due to all the hard work now would i? mehe

Great sketches, I really like your process shots. With what you've posted you've definitely improved on your art from your beginning sketches to your last post. You've shown great progress in digital sketching, keep up the good work!

You need to edit your first post and click go advanced then attach an image in attachment manager.
I like your study of the egg, it's getting better. You can try using a chalk brush it makes a good sketching tool.

Hey, sorted it out now, thanks a bunch!

Thank you, I'm aiming to work faster as well, I need to get out of this detail frenzy nit-picky attitude when drawing mehehe. You speak about this chalk brush? Is this a photoshop brush or do you mean an actual chalk brush?

    Update 08/06/2011

Here are my figure studies from posemaniac and pixelovely!

I've set them up in a compilation, I'm not sure if thats better to do than post them one by one, just that some of the pages were somewhat blank.

All of these studies ranged from 60 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds.

Any crits would be fantastic please

Hey there, just incase you didn't know, all of this work wasn't done in 3 days if thats what you meant or thought...lol. A lot of this was done during the past 6 months to the last year, I'm probably wrong in thinking thats what you thought though?

But thanks for your kind words I appreciate them.

    Update 09/06/2011

Even though I wanted to get the detail as right as I could without going overboard on time, I really wanted to look at how one of the master painters used mark making in their painting. I also made usage of blending with a hard brush. I tried to pay attention to the lighting, where shadows are casted and just generally take in information on the form of the face.

Thanx for kind words about my sketches
I like your last work too, I know it's not everything here you've done in 3 days, but anyway, even 1 work for one day is a lot for me))) Keep posting )))

    WOOOOOO!!!! Your last one!!!!
Do more masterstudies! This kicks ass. I think you will learn a lot from trying out different masters, as your are exploring ways to paint at the moment.
I really like your figure drawings, a lot more solid than mine. Are you living somewhere around Essex? Because you seem to have found drawing classes that I can't find :p

Keep it up, very nice work!

And on a side note, you should really upload your entire sb again with the attachment manager. Imageshack will delete the pictures in some time, and all the progress of a sb is lost.

Wow thanks for the kind comments! I'm planning on doing more master studies, and I was thinking of approaching them in a more geometrical way with the different values and shadows, then block forming it and forgetting the detail, this way I will learn just as much but in a more effective and quicker way? What do you guys think of this technique? Just I heard a few artists on here and else where mention everything is shapes, shapes and more shapes.

And there's nothing wrong with the figure drawings, they're awsome! Keep up the good work, I'm gonna be studying a variety of Loomis, hogarth and bridgeman soon. But are there any paricular areas where each book shines with their strengths?

I live in Norwich, but I do come from essex! and I don't go to drawing classes atm, just use

    posemaniacs

    and

    pixelovely.

Ah nooo, I wonder why imageshack would do such an evil deed like that? I'll re-upload everything, maybe set a better layout too.

    Update 09/06/2011

Another update, trying to focus on the head with the skull and face structures. Its kinda hard to take in the information, but I have been trying to test myself when studying facial anatomy and knowing what I am drawing, not just copying.

    Update 12/06/2011

New update, been sketching more, some of these are from life, but most from Loomis references. I've tried to bake all of the information in my head, but obviusly that can't happen over night, I'll need to keep drawing them and testing my memory.

1st image is some guy sitting on the bus, I was hungover when I draw that and it wasn't a pleasant experience lol. On the right of that is a life drawing of my hand drawing with the little 2B pencil, it wasn't shaded so I refined it, then the rude one above is using the same lighting properties in my room, don't ask about the little insect guy?

The 3 shaded faces are Loomis referenced, but I decided to shade them see what the outcome would be.

Everything at the bottom is referenced from Loomis apart from the shaded still life.

Any crits please, would be wonderful
