Hey mate, bout time I broke my lazy cycle of not visiting other people's sketchbooks.
    Well! What can I say?

On your project looks like you have some interesting ideas being brewed. I'm hoping you still keep that sheep aspect in your developed versions. Even if it's taking the middle one of those sketches (The one you like) and having the backdrop being creepy skins of sheep that he's lying on.
Basically, I'm liking the sketches, but be sure to inject some of the other aspects you brainstormed. I'm trying to think of good examples...Ahh

    http://www.feral-kid.com/filter/edit...TORIAL-Wired-I
Like this, basically. It looks visually sureal, but if you look at it more than 30 seconds you get how it all ties in and creates an imaginative, arresting concept.
Oh, but don't worry, I don't mean to say you need to go that overboard, just the only example I could think of.

I'd definintiely say that the one you favour has the strongest body language, and sends the best message figure wise. Just be sure to incoperate more aspects! My illustrator tutor always bangs on about pushing your concepts in illustrations.

Anyways, hope that was of some help. I'm looking forward to seeing how you go through with it.

Also, love all the sketches of Johnny boy and co, the one with the wall backdrop really grabbed my attention for some reason. Keep up the good work as usual, mate!

Naidy: Thanks for reminding me to push the concepts, I do tend to lose focus on them. This is a fine art project, not an illustration, but your point is still very valid and very very helpful. Thanks so much!

(Also I'm impressed you can read my scribbles)

Sooo here is where it's heading now. It kind of went in a weird direction as I tightened up the concepts.

Ahh, my handwriting's much worse, I can promise you that.

Anyways, - Christ. That knew sketch you've come up with is bloody brilliant! See, you've got me all excited to see it all finished now. It's got a lovely rythm to it and that "AH!" moment when you look at it and the theme clicks.
Be interesting to see where that last post you got goes too, there's a nice fleshyness to the figure. I love fleshy figures. (Not in a weird way, mind you. Just asthetically speaking)

Oh, also thinking that last picture, if it's allright to crit. I'd try linking the colours in the tree a bit more with, say, the foreground/ground or something. Just so that warm green is spread around enough to attract the eye back to the figure (if that makes sense). Other than that, good stuff as usual.

    Hey Clur,

Thanks for dropping by. I think your gestures and charcter head drawings are great!
Your hands on the other hand seem to be falling behind. Remember to block in the big shapes before drawing each individual finger.

    Otherwise, keep working!

I had the same thought - and I think it's just that your work has a very classical structure akin to Albrecht Dürer or Da Vinci- because of the heavy eye lids and short, but structural, nose. It give your work a sculptural look - which is pretty sweet.
It really suits the old-timey couple in post 133 - the profile face (last 2 images in the same post) is probably my fave. It reminds me of Pan from Pan's Labyrinth

Great stuff overall, It might help to do some studies solely focused on light and rendering- your latest piece with the hands has lots of detail- but no overall light source.
With rendering the big overall light source is the most important- all the little stuff is just a bonus.

Looking forward to more stuff for sure!
    Happy sketching ^_^

Rhubix: Haha, your comment had me preening for an hour at least after I read it. :'D And thanks for pointing out the light source problem! I really need to just buckle down and do some basic studies on that. Later tonight hopefully.

FireSong: Thanks! I'm kind of excited for it to be done, too.

Okay, here's a new self portrait, a quick observational of a sleepy friend (who woke up before I finished), yet more Troubled Sleep, and some cartoon figures.

Jonathan Haha, thanks! I'll try scanning at a higher dpi next time. Unfortunately I can't scan the other thing. (Might be difficult, considering it's seven feet tall.)

Here's a slightly better photo of it though. And a self portrait, trying for economy of line this time.

Didn't know it was your birthday! Hope you're having a good one, mate!
And I thought I'd posted a comment here atleast 3 days ago. I musn't have pressed send or something.

I just want to say, that troubled sleep picture's going swimmingly. You're really pushing yourself with the rendering, and you know what? I think it's going to be one of the best pictures so far shading wise, on here when you're done, so keep to it!
Sure as anything remember I'd been watching you when your art looked like the older example. Some crazy improvement you've done this year, here's to the next year.

To repeat everything Naidy has said:

Love all the updates Clur. I have to say that in all honesty, the Troubled Sleep piece you are working on, just the layout alone, is my favorite thing on CA at the moment. I am so excited to see the finished product! The layout and the imagery, it's all so solid!

Keep up the good work and Happy Birthday!

Wow! Your work is stunning! I love the expressive flow of your sketches, They're really organic and beautiful, I love the image in the latest comparison, it's gorgeous. The stylized look your characters have is really engaging! I don't know if it's intentional but your style of pencil drawing and watercolour reminds me very much of the art nouveau movement, and Alphonse Mucha's work, keep it up!
