    Newbie sculpter advice

I have come to this forum as i am starting out sculpting and would like some advice if possible...i am sculpting a scifi helmet out of standard waterbased clay..i am having difficulties sclpting large flat areas of particularly the dome area.
I can get the clay smooth but getting it perfectly flat is quite hard to achieve,is there a technique i can use to achieve this.

Many Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

The simple answer would be to just use water. A long winded answer would depend on a few things. The quality of the clay. if it's not the finest then no matter how much water you polish with it will only ever be as fine as the grit of the clay allows. To go finer you have to do that after the firing. This is where you get the really fine polishing done. So maybe you just need to wait for that stage to really get a desirable finish.

Here's a quick bit of blurb on polishing http://www.ehow.com/how_8114236_polish-clay.html
