Jonathan Hardesty (aka Mindcandyman) is the best example I know of. Plus, he's one of my teachers!

yeah I know Mindcandyman is good, but he doesn't really do that much art from his imagination, its almost entirely based on traditional art I'd say jatherip has shown alot of improvement in his sketchbook, i'm trying to find others

As far as I know he paints from life, which is infinitely harder than you're making it seem with this post.

Give mah another few years and it'll be me.....HAHA...MWAHAHAHAH *thunder in the background*

Algenpfleger and Mindcandyman both have impressed me the most going through their SBs......! Mindcandyman was the only one I've seen where it's a TOTAL beginner going to professional though. Algen had been drawing for something like three years (not as seriously though until the point he made his SB). At least that's what I read in his intro post.

I think Algenpfleger was fairly good already when he started a sketchbook (of course improved a lot but I do not think the most of all).
    I vote for Mindcandyman as well. ^^;

Gah I actually hoped I made the most improvement... =P Well I guess most of us hope that as well.

Ummm wow.....if the comparison image on the last page is true...this guy is going to be a future master. How can you go from a pure beginner with awkward proportions and rendering to professional level in ONE YEAR? THIS HAS TO BE AN EPIC TROLL.

I think most people were stalkers before they sarted posting. So you never see their very first attempts.

And also depends on when they joined - while still in high school, or after a couple years at college, or already in the industry, will make a big difference.

And Randis is correct to say that art is a compitition. We all compete for jobs, to design things that people want, to make profit for the client, to keep ourselves employed. Hell CA has compititions every week. We buy books like 'Spectrum' which are basically portfolios made up of compitition entries.

While it is nice to see an artists' progression, I don't keep my earliest things online because if I did, what little improvement I may have made would lead to many comments of "good improvement from page 1/the start" (I'm sure you've seen sketchbooks like this).

These are nice compliments, but a student needs to be getting crits on their current stuff only, and comparing their work to where they want to be - not where they were in the past. Nevertheless there are hundreds of fantastic artists here who improved much more impressively, one only has to look in the "Show your before and after Conceptart.org" thread and some of the many underrepresented sketchbooks

Pretty much what's happening to me right now, despite the thread name change. I barely post in it anymore because of, aside from the lack of a batch uploader, most of the comments aren't really all that constructive anymore. don't get me wrong, it's nice to have any comments at all, but I had a lot of nice, often biting critique early on.

I'd guess this is part of the reason why some people start new sketchbook threads eventually.

I think the story of artists going from zero to hero is one that has been seen over and over again.

    My vote goes to Mindcandyman.

Farvus has very notable improvement in the self portraits section.

    My Sketchbook

And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.

MindCandyMan for technical improvement without question. But I would actually propose Odayga if only for improvement in the community.
