    s1gnal's journey

I was reading MindCandyMan's excellent thread about his development as an artist and decided to start my own sketchbook thread. Don't expect pretty pictures or cool stuff - I still have a long way to go.

I currently live and study in Tampere, Finland (BA: Art & Media). I'm thinking of going to Vancouver Film School to study 3d modeling later in the future. I also have a stubborn fixation on working as an artist in the game industry.

I'll post some of my life drawings from this year and a few from last year some time later.

Great start for your sketchbook. It's good to see that you're doing some anatomy studies.
Maybe you should take a look at the Loomis anatomy books (see here), but you've probably already heard of them..
Anyway, keep drawing as much as possible and you will see improvements in no-time (:
    Good luck!

Thanks! Indeed I have read Loomis. I even got the hardcover of Figure Drawing for All It's Worth (facsimile by Titan Book, ordered from Amazon) not too long ago.

Here's a quick Painter 12 test. I haven't decided whether or not I should buy it - Photoshop is a fantastic tool, but the color mixing in it doesn't really work as well as in Painter. I think PS also lacks decent blending tools. I do have CS5 with the newer paintbrush tools and the mixer brush (which I haven't figured out completely just yet).

I got a little frustrated with the forest and just couldn't get it right. The reference photo (not included) was taken by me.

Another Painter test. Still not sure whether or not I should get it.

    (It's a chocolate egg.)

Is it ok for me to post a study sketch based on an existing art piece?

I've been studying and painting John Alvin's original Blade Runner poster in Painter. Obviously the copyright belongs to the original artist. Legal-wise things tend to get a little fuzzy with situations like this, so I just want to be sure.

Obviously I wouldn't post Alvin's work as my own. It's just that I've been wanting to study paintings of other professional illustrators and painters for a while now.

If it's not ok, I won't post it.

Give credit and make it's obvious it's a master study. Research and educational purposes fall under fair use, and therefore an exemption from copyright laws, but to be safe you should give credit to the copyright holders.

Heya! All this looks good so far, I really like those Painter pieces. Especially the chocolate egg, the reflection is fantastic.

That last batch of figures have a good feeling to them, and it'd be nice to see more finished figures from you.

    Keep it up!

Thanks for the comments! Ok, here's my (unfinished) take on the Alvin Blade Runner poster. Looks like my trial copy of Painter is going to expire soon. I've decided it's better to save a little money and get my own copy.

Studies studies studies! I'm really trying to focus on faces now. Sorry about the shoddy phone cam quality! Going to scan a few more things some time later.

    Hi!

The second last picture of the lady looking to the left has a nice, smooth line! It makes the image feel much more convincing

    Cheers!

Hey! (Minelo and I go to the same school)

Had painting class today. Frustrated out of my mind right now.

This time, at the other end of the classroom, we had an A4-size print of a Da Vinci painting, the idea being that you wouldn't be able to slavishly copy the work but to go check it for reference and try to paint it from memory. I wasn't the least bit happy with my work. Infact, I threw it away before we were going to look at everyone's work altogether. Obviously I wasn't going to be able to mimic Da Vinci, but I feel like I failed in everything that I tried to do, every step I tried to take.

I've been trying to paint traditionally for a while now, but I can't help it that it feels like rocket science or black magic every time. Can't mix the right colors, too much water/oil, too much pigment, wrong brushes, dirty brushes etc. You need to be able to handle so many things before even thinking about the painting or the subject itself. Look, I know you're not supposed to master everything in no time at all and that it's always going to be difficult on some level. I'm a hopeless perfectionist, I get easily frustrated at things and, on an almost subconscious level, I always have impossibly high expectations of myself. It's really difficult to positively work towards a goal, sometimes.

I'll still continue to drag myself to the painting classes (it's only once a week...), because I still feel like there's something in traditional painting you just won't learn digitally alone. I can't paint at my place either, because there's not enough room and dealing with highly flammable/irritating materials like turpentine in there is an entirely different problem that has to be dealt with. I prefer oils, but maybe I should switch to acrylics after all?

Anyways, sorry about this little rant. I just felt like I had to get it out of my system. I shall upload more sketches soon.

It sounds like you're getting really stressed out by your efforts to improve. It's great that you've got the drive and the work ethic but don't burn out, right? Do you warm up before starting a drawing session?

Keep it up. It's all hours under your belt, even if it seems slow.

Thanks, I've actually had stress-related problems before. Almost burned out several months ago. Nowadays I try my best to listen to myself more and try to react when things seem bad.

We had a c&c session couple of days ago in observational drawing. The advice given to me was that I should keep drawing more and more organic stuff (trees, for example) from observation, avoid getting stuck in smaller details, stop putting too much tension to it, be more relaxed and just let things flow freely and smoothly.

A little something I did after Christmas. I let it live and develop a little along the phases - added the grates, shortened the beak, etc.

Sorry, no textures (yet), can't do any of that on this laptop and especially not without a drawing tablet.

I've been very busy filling up sketchbooks, studying different drawing/painting media and working as an intern at a game company, so I haven't posted much lately. I think I should scan a bunch of stuff this weekend.
