Update! I was bored on Friday so I started a painting from a reference. Here is what I got so far:

Initial pencil sketch. Too rushed, full of mistakes...

    IMG_20110520_203742.jpg

Oh well, let's fix it up a bit on gimp and start placing colors:

    Tovi2render.jpg

Current version is below, a few hours later (probably 10 hours total):

    3933962.jpg

    My comments:
I struggled quite a lot with the face at that particular angle, I redrew it once before coloring. Then when doing the colors, the face kept bugging me, I eventually gave up and overlaid (no, I didn't trace, just compared then fixed stuff after the fact) the reference to figure out my mistakes. What really messed me up was the alignment of the chin with the eyes, I shouldn't draw the jaw/chin first, that's usually not the best idea.

Update on copyrights: I can post my art (thankfully) but not the reference picture.

Update: I wont be in town for 2 weeks so I wont be posting life drawings but I'll try to keep this up to date anyway. Otherwise, I'll try to post life drawings weekly. This week's drawings (paper meant to be white... I should take better pictures):

    90 second poses:
    IMG_20110527_202621.jpg

    Still 90 seconds.
    IMG_20110527_202639.jpg

    20-30 (I forgot) minutes
    IMG_20110527_202649.jpg

    20-30 minutes
    IMG_20110527_202657.jpg

    30 minutes:
    IMG_20110527_202715.jpg

The last one was a disaster, I restarted it 10 times, couldn't go very far.

More older life drawings, I wanted to keep a digital record of them somewhere. Those are typically longer poses (a couple of hours) besides the portraits which are more like 10-20 minutes. I feel a bit rusty when I look at some of those. I should get to it again. One can probably guess which is older and which is newer:
    IMG_20110528_095309.jpg

1 - I think the chin/cheek line is too far on the right.

    IMG_20110528_095326.jpg

2 - Neck too long, I made that drawing 2 years ago or so and I just noticed it today. Her right arm (on the left) looks too small overall.

    IMG_20110528_095343.jpg

3 - The legs/feet kinda suck, I should study those more.

    IMG_20110528_095400.jpg

4 - forehead make the head look a bit distorded. feets and hands are not finished. The shading/anatomy of the upper body is soso.

    IMG_20110528_095415.jpg

5 - Her arms look a bit broken, the legs could have been better too.

    IMG_20110528_095430.jpg

6 - The face doesnt feel right, doesnt look like the model. I think there are other issues, the area around her right knee dosn't feel right either.

    IMG_20110528_095444.jpg

7 - Too much hair, I think it was done to compensate for other issues with the face. The feet are broken.

    IMG_20110528_095457.jpg

8 - A few issues with the neck. The arm looks flat and structureless. Her legs are soso to bad.

    IMG_20110528_095512.jpg

9 - I cant tell much as I like this drawing, I guess her hands/feet could have been better. I am not too sure about the proportions but I know the model was very short though.

    IMG_20110528_095532.jpg

10 - No comments, looks good for the time I spent on it

    IMG_20110528_095549.jpg

11 - Shows my weaknesses again (feet/knee etc). Looks good overall given the difficulty of the pose.

    IMG_20110528_095603.jpg

12 - Head looks a bit distorded. Knees seem pretty thin.

    IMG_20110528_095616.jpg

13 - Right arm and head have issues. That pose was hard because a lot of the body was hidden.

    IMG_20110528_095632.jpg

14 - Head too big, neck too long. I was experimenting with colors.

    IMG_20110528_095640.jpg

15 - NECK! Her foot is broken.

    IMG_20110528_095649.jpg

16 - Head feels distorded even though his head was looking like this in reality .

Edit: Looking at those drawings again, I am noticing quite a few obvious mistakes, I listed them under each drawing and I'll assign a number to each. People are welcomed to add more comments, please be tough on me, I like it.

I updated one of my posts, I removed some pics because I got worried about copyrights. I put back the final version of the painting concerned but unfortunately, I cannot show the reference.

I am starting assignment 1 of the study group: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=209890

I pick that reference as I like dragons and I think it will challenging enough for me to do:
    ws_Riding_a_dragon_1600x1200.jpg

I am starting with 3 layers, not sure it s a good choice:

    Assign1.step1.png

I refining the volumes a bit, I am trying to use the negative space as much as I can, I feel a bit squished horizontally for some reason:

    Assign1.step2.png

Update: Some life drawings from last week and this week. Somehow, I feel that 2 weeks break didnt do any good to me . Comments are under the attachments.

    IMG_20110623_095738.jpg

    1- Meh...

    IMG_20110623_095749.jpg

    2- More Meh...

    IMG_20110623_095800.jpg

    3- A little better.

    IMG_20110623_095838.jpg

4- Odd looking position, I blame the legs/feet. If somebody has specific comments, I'd be glad to hear them.

    IMG_20110623_095902.jpg

5- I am fairly happy about that one.

    IMG_20110623_095918.jpg

6- Focused on the face mostly, then I rushed the body (hence why the head look small compared to the rest of the body)

    Update on my first assignement:

2 More steps where I try to redefine the dragon a bit, there is some distortion that I am gonna try to fix later:

    Assign1.step3.png

    Assign1.step4.png

From now on, I am gonna work longer between updates to not post too many steps.

    Update:

As suggested, I worked a bit more on the background, that made me notice more problems with negative space. Somehow, I am struggling to fit in all the features under the dragon. I was painting everything at once so it looks a bit chaotic now.

Update on the reference study. I just spent a couple of hours on it, I must say I am getting overwhelmed by the amount of details I have to fit in there. I think it s getting very important for me to get the main volumes right asap or it will much harder to fix it later on. Any suggestions are welcome at this point for me to make the best use of my time on that study.

Update: I put that assignment on the side for now, it gave me too much headache. I just drew a pin-up again from reference:

    Roobs.jpg

Method used: no linework, I just started to paint with wide brushes right away, started with black, then refined with some basic colors, added intermediate colors as I progressed.

good start to this sketchbook, those lifedrawings are looking great! lifedrawing is extremely helpful with drawing the figure, but i think you'd also really benefit from looking at how to construct the figure and by studying anatomy, picking up anatomy books by loomis (you can get pdf's of loomis's online legally too), bridgeman, hogarth, villpu etc - look at how they build up the human figure, then apply that to your figure drawings and your imaginative drawings.

good luck with the dragon painting, looks like you picked a pretty challenging picture keep the art coming!

@Jessibelle, thanks for dropping by, I started to feel lonely on this little sketchbook page. I will get those anatomy books, at least the loomis one. If I wanted to buy one anatomy book, which would you recommend?

I noticed late how tough that reference study was, the assignment is about doing something challenging but I think I aimed too high. Oh well, it will be good practice.

I know I should be studying loomis or so but I liked that painting on http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...=216040&page=3 so I asked for the reference and wanted to have my own take on it. It's still a bit of a WIP now but here is what I got after about 6 hours:

    sittingdance.jpg

Below is an animated gif of my stuggle:

    sittingdance.gif

I'd like comments on the rendering/choice of colors on that one. I am struggling with the color/shading details so I often go back and try to simplify things.

Update on last post. Decided it was not good enough so I worked a bit more on it. I adjusted the color balance and some of the contrast also.

Been a while since I updated this. Here are some 'silhouettes' I made with Alchemy:

I am trying to edit the top left one on the last panel. Feel free to reuse them, just tell me beforehand.

I updated the silhouettes to have them numbered. My favorites are (first number is attachment number):
    1.6
    1.37
    1.56
    2.1
    2.9
    2.30
    3.10
    3.21
    3.25
    3.27
    4.1 (see WIP thread)
    4.18
    4.26

For the same reason, I am likely to work on those.

    Long time no post here:

2 first images are an angel concept I have to work on. I got sidetracked on the second version... (reference http://mjranum-stock.deviantart.com/...-Girl-51364224 ).

The 2 next ones (digital and pen) are fanarts of the singer Yui Itsuki from Yousei Teikoku, those are albums covers.
