I have been drawing self portraits for some time now, and I finally think I am ready to show some of them. I find it very difficult to draw or paint myself. I always feel there is something not quit right. Comments are very welcome and very much appreciated!
This study was done digital from a mirror. I spend about 1-2 hours not really sure.
I am still trying to do self portraits. I don't think my proportions are right jet, so I
have tried to focus on how my eyes can be drawn. The line drawing is a study where I focused on the proportions. I find it difficult to draw myself from a mirror, because I have to move my head to draw, that is properly why it is much easier to draw a model than it is to draw a self portrait.
nice progress, keep it up! I know what you mean when you say something always feels wrong, don't let this worry you, it's completely nateral. When drawing your own face (and family and friends for that matter) you'll notice that its very easy to pick mistakes and errors. This because as humans we are experts at reading peoples faces. We all spent countless hours looking at faces so we're very good at seeing mistakes. Next time you get a chance, ask a good friend if you can paint his/her portrait then ask them for their crits, you'll see what I mean.
Also while on that subject, its always good to draw and paint as many different portraits of different people as possible. Every single person has their own unique features and face so its good to practice on others. This will also help you understand your own portraits and what makes you unique.
Painting from a mirror is good, I should do it more often ;p but if your struggling because you keep moving don't be afraid to use photos of yourself. Just don't become reliant on one or the other.
Also, something I learnt recently is to try and paint in 3D forms. Try to look past your portriats being 2d pictures. Like everything, faces exist in 3D space, so trying to depict them this way will enhance your portrait skills and also help you when working out values.
Heres a useful set of downloadable books which might be helpful - http://alexhays.com/loomis/
Thanks for the advice Logistic!
I have been away for the summer holidays, but now I am back and will start on my self-portraits again. I think I will start to use photo reference now for some of the portraits.
