    CHoW#245 :: Jack the Ripper

    DESCRIPTION
"Jack the Ripper" is the best-known name given to an unidentified serial killer who was active in the largely impoverished areas in and around the Whitechapel district of London in 1888, and he was the prime suspect for the murders of many female prostitutes. Although his true identity was never revealed, there are many theories and depictions of this mysterious serial killer.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_the_Ripper

Illustrate Jack the Ripper in 1880's London

    Things to remember:
    • Can only be male (just to make sure)
    • Keep era and style in mind, its 1880's london, not alpha centauri in 2391!
    • Bonus points for illustrating Jack the Ripper in the process of a murder!
    • Try to keep it as realistic as possible, imagine how he would have looked like.
    • Concentrate on both the design and illustrative sides!

    Good luck, and be creative!

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    PLEASE NOTE:
Over the last few CHoW challenges there has been an increase in the number of 'illustration' style submissions which have focused more on the setting and additional elements than on the character design itself. Due to this, we will be starting to be more selective with which images go to poll. This is not to say that you may not create a background or present the character in a more illustrative way, however entries will have to adhere to the following:

    - The character MUST be the focal point of the image.
    - The character must be designed to a level where it still clearly fits the brief if the background is removed
    - Additional characters are allowed providing they do not draw focus away from the main character.

CHoW stands for Character of the week and so we are looking for well designed characters not just people in a situation or environment related to the theme!

PLEASE NOTE THE RULES AND THE DEADLINE TIME

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    DEADLINE:
    SUNDAY, May 22nd, 2011

Deadline is Sunday, at 9:00 pm (GMT +1). (Check your timezone!)

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    THE RULES
If you do not stick to these 6 simple rules, you will not be added to the poll.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    1) FOLLOW THE TOPIC.
It's about designing the character of the topic. The environment or side characters are far less important.

    2) SHOW AT LEAST OF YOUR DESIGN.

This is not an illustration contest, but a design contest. Show your whole design!

    3) POST YOUR FINAL IN THE FINALS THREAD.

    4) INCLUDE WIPS WITH YOUR FINAL.

Show your work in progress and post (links to) this in the finals thread!

    5) SAVE YOUR FILES IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT.
    Chow##_Nickname
    example: "CHOW#100_Oblio.jpg"

    No final.jpgs please!

    6) PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC

(you can add CA logo, etc).

About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.

    _____________

BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Elixy and Parsakoira will make the selection.
Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

    ON GETTING TO POLL
    -------------------------
    NEW ROUND RULE: WIPS PLEASE!
    -------------------------
    SUBMISSION FORMAT REMINDER

PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!

I'm actually going to do some decent sketching and drawing for this one, and set up a bit more of a complex scene than I usually do. All in the name of sweet progress

It's just occurred to me that while I have an intimate knowledge of ladies fashions 1884 through to 1890, I have embarressingly little idea what men were wearing at that point. On the plus side, men's fashions in the later victorian era didn't vary that much so providing I don't randomly include a doublet and a tricorn it'll probably pass.

On this note; are we going for historical accuracy as opposed to introducing things like steampunk/monsters/etc?

Want to give credit to the admins for coming up with such interesting topics and mixing up the open-ended topics like Elemental Mages and Atlantean Guardians with more specific Jack the Rippers and War Criminals. Keeps us exercising different muscles.

    Keep up the good work.

Couldn't partake last week, due to a school trip, but this is damn tempting...

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the

    Ooh, love the topic idea, I'm in! First-timer here, let's see how this goes... <_<;

But aww, does it really have to be male? There's a theory the killer was actually a female midwife, you know... Oh well, there goes my idea. XD

Really cool topic. You mention bonus points for being in the process of a murder - Can I ask what the rules are on violence?

This topic is pretty cool, which is why I'm extra-super excited about it since it's my first CHOW ever! I plan on participating in these contests all summer as a way to force myself to learn digital painting. As can be seen from my meager WIP, my skills are lacking.

My idea is that he's a lower class Victorian man with a pretty serious mental illness. He gets off on his crimes, but is still kind of scared of himself. Anyway, I'm excited to be a part of CHOW for the upcoming months. Woo!

    I guess I'll give it a try~

I'd love to do some maniac murderer design for this one but I guess that will be done plenty, so I'll do a more realistic attempt.

Basically started out with imagining how I'd like him to be like and behave, then thought about what kinda look would fit him.

Basically some very average man no one would really notice (or suspect), one that could even almost be handsome if there wasn't that lil creepy thing. I imagine him to be a rather stressed and pressured man, very agitated and jumpy movements, then, out of the psychopathic tendencies he must have as the serial killer he is, at night when the stress reaches a certain point venting on one of his victims, the police's investigations following that of course only adding to that nervousness.

Just trying to decide on some basic design here, will prolly do a different image/scene for the final submission.

Yeah dunno... might try some more variations but that's basically it.

So is the due date June 3rd then? or simply a week from today? And as with Mr. Gadbury, what are the rules on gore? anything within reason goes? Like how about he's sitting in his perfectly horrific mess, having a good time making his specialty sausages...out of her entrails? Or is that too much?

Zombie Jack! Vampire Jack! Alien Jack! What's that? Out-of-comfort-zone-Jack? Now THAT is scary! Maybe I should just go ahead and show him gutting my ego like a pig.

Anyways, if I post some thumbs, it'll motivate me to forge ahead...

And here's another more graphic-design take, with his shadow forming like an almost vampiric or demonic shape, him being pure evil.

Ahh darn, my first idea was to draw a wife, who is getting revenge on all the prostitutes which pursued her husband to cheat on her. Darn.

Kinda wanted to get away from the heavy-set trenchoated guy that he usually gets drawn as, instead going for a more spindly, older, upper class psychopath

EDIT: updated pic, not many people posting yet, didnt want to fill the thread up with my wips so heres the latest stage.

Tommoy: Yummy! loving the dramatic lighting

jolen: I know it's early days but yours looks a bit more 30s 40s I think some mutton chop sideburns and a look at the fashions of the day would really help

Had 40 mins to start refining stuff. Pretty busy at the mo so not sure I'll get to finnish, but great topic mod people!
