    CHoW#244 :: VOTING :: Guardian of Atlantis

    FINALS
    CHoW#244 :: Guardian of Atlantis
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    Design a guardian for the underwater lost city of Atlantis
    DEADLINE: SUNDAY, May 15th 2011
    Deadline is Sunday, at 9:00 pm (GMT+1) Check your timezone!
    DESCRIPTION
    This weeks theme is a chance to take a look at some non human character design and create a guardian of the underwater city, Atlantis. The inhabitants of this lost, city used to be human, thousands and thousands of years ago, but they have evolved to survive in their new environment and whilst they still appear humanoid, they are far from it. Atlantis has been protected over the years by a shield, the form of which is up to you; it could be magic, technology or perhaps an underwater cave which acts as an air pocket, whatever the reason, the character must be able to breathe and move in water and on land! The illustration of the piece is just as important as the development of the character so plan your image carefully! As always, images which are not well developed will not make it to the poll!

    Things to remember:
    • Think about the inllustration of the piece But do not forget the character design!
    • Can be Male or Female
    • Must be huminoid in form BUT NOT HUMAN!
    • Must be able to breathe naturally in water and in air (No diving suits)
    • Think about what Atlantis might have become, is it still a beautiful, peacful place or is it more like Rapture from Bioshock
    • Can be any style or genre
    • Think carefully about how water affects light and colour!

    My 1st completed chow!

    Went for quite a realistic approach to what would be practical underwater, so no loose clothing/bulky items etc, so it's all pretty simple.
    Didn't get to completely finish everything 100% but it's pretty much there!

    Do I need to name the wip anything in particular??

    CHOW#244 Guardian of Atlantis

    I imagined the Guardian to be still clinging to the the Greek culture at the time of Atlantis' legendary sinking. Of course, after hundreds of years, the Guardian's armor and dress style has evolved based on its new environment under the sea. Gold is valued for not only because of its rarity (the Atlanteans raid human ships to get gold), it doesn't rust underwater, but also for its glitter in the dark depths of Atlantis. Gold wouldn't make a very practical armor, so I imagined it was more of a decorative plating on her armor. Her armor is shaped culturally by her surroundings, like coral and marine life skeletal structures. Also, it makes sense to have a cage like porous armor to allow water to pass through easily when swimming at 60mph. The cape doesn't make sense for high speed swimming, but even Guardians are vain and want to look heroic. =) Think of it as her military "dress" uniform.

    Biologically, the Guardian has evolved gills, elongated, webbed and deadly sharp claws, a deadly narwhale like horn for impaling and jelly fish like appendages that have the same paralyzing qualities of a jellyfish. Scales of varying colors on her face can change color and blend her face with the environment like an octopus. This is used more as a tactic to frighten/surprise her opponents rather than to act as any type of practical camouflage.

    The Guardian's sword is forged from an unknown super dense metal ore that is mined from the foundations of Atlantis and is able to cut through anything made by surface dwellers.

    The City of Atlantis is carved from cliffs in the ocean trench. An organic jelly like membrane has been engineered by the Atlanteans to create air bubbles underwater. The soft glow of their city towers resembles the eerie glow of bioluminescent fish in these cold depths.

    Ok I think I wrote too much. Hope that isn't a negative. Anyway, I am inspired by everyone's hard work. I hope you will like my work also. Thanks.

    um... did I miss the deadline? I miscalculated the time difference apparently... sending a prayer up to the moderation gods to lemme in? worked pretty hard on this one...

    followed the idea of humans evolving the same routes of our fellow mammals, so wipped up a bunch of potential species, ended up choosing the crab guy, with an adapted hand and foot combo - index and middle finger fused to form a super claw to get a food and lobsters, pinky and thumb and outer toes adapted for gripping onto rocks and coral.

    For the armor I chose the greek style, since the Atlanteans were from that neighborhood (or so i assume). The city in the back didn't get as much attention as I'd hoped.

    The shield is formed by the islands that are chained and tethered to the city below, forming a protective barrier from waves, eyes, and ships. the atlanteans have built on the island's bottom as well, even bridging the entire gap at times with dizzy towers, lit with the bio-luminescent orbs that make civilized life possible down there.
