    helio's sketchbook (updated when needed)

Hi there guys, prospective concept artist in the making here! So yeah, I've started to dabble in concept art about two years ago but I feel that I'm not developping as fast as I can/should, so hopefully you guys will be able to point me in the right direction and hopefully help me to become a full rounded artist

Fishbed- thanks for the compliment! I still got lots of work ahead of me to reach my desired level tho...

anyway, some quick landscapes studies from photo references, trying to get my head around color (spend wayyy too much time doing only value sketches and I'm lacking in the color theory subject):

Lined paper is the devil's tool... but it's also the only thing I had when I did those sketches. Tool used was a regular black pen.

some more stuff done today in art history class (yes, I was paying attention too because most of those sketchs are quick studies of Masaccio's paintings):

Live nude drawing class last wednesday, love those, too bad they won't allow us to do very precise studies.
Sorry for the terrible quality of the pic but those were made in A3 paper and my camera sucks.

and some random stuff on the border of my class notebook + a quick photoshop sketch:

Well, another week, tons of work and study ahead. Did some sketches todays on my regular notepad but I've been attacked by the lazyness monster. Anyway, a quick color/enviro study before heading out to bed:

Today was yet again Nude drawing class day, and minus the weird exercises and scribbling like retards it was all good clean fun. Too bad that the male model had pectus excavatum. So much for accuracy on the chest area...

A left handed sketch that didn't turn out that bad, despiste my total lack of coordination between brain and left hand:

And as an extra, a previous sketch that I've decided to take up to painting stage. Still rough tought.

Mila- Thanks for the kind work, I'll be sure to indeed keep it as up as high as I can!

Right, so today I didn't doodle that much due to a tight schedule. I did, however, had some time in my morning class to try out some charcoal drawing. I'm not totally pleased with the end result drawing wise (proportions and such) but I did had some fun messing around with them charcoal sticks. I should probably get a set of charcoal pencils instead for control's sake.

This one was heavily inspired by Feng Zhu's "Sniper vehicle" tutorial on youtube:

Video class was pretty boring, so I entertained myself with some aliens and worms:

Some 20 minutes environments studies. Most of them are studies of still shots from the top gear tv show and I was more concerned about getting a good color acuracy by eyeballing it without resorting to the color picker.

hej cool stuff dude, awesome enviromets! i think portraits are your weak spot, so work on them a little bit more, the last girl study looks much better than the older portraits, that means you are improving so keep it up

mass87- Yeah, portraits are indeed my weak spot (amongst many others), so I did actually took the day off today to do a few studies of faces. Most of them ended up looking quite DERP-ish, but I think overall it was good because I'm finally starting to let go of the line and start rendering stuff by masses and planes instead. I do need a lot of work on my proportions thought...

Then I tried to apply what I had learned with the graphite studies on a imagination portrait on photoshop only to fail miserably:

    Name: what_I_havent_learned_today.jpg
Views: 894
Size: 52.6 KB

Meanwhile, some stuff I did over the weekend:

    Name: monster_gore_sketches.jpg
Views: 890
Size: 248.9 KB

Aaand started to fool around with sketchup, will probably try to take these two projects to full painting stage:

    Name: sketchup_sketches.jpg

Size: 124.6 KB

C&C is more than welcome! Time to soldier on and draw some more

    Wasp

another round of pencil stuff, some life drawing and some photo studies. Sometimes I feel like I'm heading in the right direction, and sometimes I feel like I've learned nothing and just get worst instead of improving. Hope I can pass these art plateaux as fast as possible!

I've gotta give credit to Philippe Faraut for the next studies because I've based them on photos of his amazing sculptures. I recomend you visit his site, he's got some great stuff you'll probably enjoy.

Not much to report today due to a tight shooting schedule that left me almost no time to draw and study. Hopefully by the end of this week this madness will have ceased

Right, so the last days have been kinda hectic, finishing up my teaser trailer for my student project, releasing it to the general public and getting loads of praise all around (I won't deny that my ego is a bit bloated at the moment).
So, here's some more photoshop foolery. Will be back to the good ol' studies tomorrow.

On today's menu: random enviros from imagination, a bunch of gesture stuff focusing on the face and the odd lost photoshop experiences.

So today I tackled portraits. I followed Ron Lemen's Gnomon DVD on the human face to help me out. Last night I had a peek at it and came up with this:

So today I focused on the DVD and did some drawing along, which isn't easy at all (matching the speeded up vid and all):

did a small break and tried to do one from imagination (that didn't go that well):

After the break, went on to watch the female face DVD and followed the same "draw as it play" routine:

Size: 369.6 KB

    Name: 6.jpg

Size: 382.0 KB

    Name: 7.jpg
Views: 775
Size: 503.9 KB

Finally, I pulled a study of my own trying to apply what I had learned during the day:

I guess it was pretty productive. I'm eager to try it out with some charcoal now and actually seeing if I can apply the stuff I've learned onto photoshop.

    C&C more than welcome!

dU5K- Thanks for the input. I know I still got a long way to go and I'm still getting my head around the figure. I'll probably spend tomorrow doing anatomy studies. As for the sketchbook thing, I got a small moleskine but it's more for random notes and quick stuff. I favored a cheap book (couldn't find any cheap blank page sketchbook) just for scribbling because it's primary use is for throw away sketches.

Anyway, some stuff that I did today. Tomorrow it's back to good ol' study.
