    CHoW#242 :: Royal Wedding
    Design a Bride/Groom for a royal wedding
    DEADLINE: SUNDAY, May 1st 2011
Deadline is Sunday, at 9:00 pm (GMT+1) Check your timezone!
    DESCRIPTION
A royal wedding is always a big, fantastic celebration with more money spent than sense. From fabulous gowns to majestic military uniforms, everything is bigger and better with a royal wedding. This week's challenge is to create either the Bride, the Groom or Both members of the wedding party for a Royal wedding. The illustration of the piece is just as important as the development of the character so plan your image carefully!!!. As always, images which are not well developed will not make it to the poll!

    Things to remember:
    • Think about the inllustration of the piece But do not forget the character design!
    • Can be any setting (Modern, Steampunk, SciFi, Fantasy....)
    • Royal wedding vary from country to country so make sure you research carefully.
    • Can be Either the bride OR groom OR Both
    • Can be from any time, country or culture, but the design MUst BE VERY CLEARLY a royal design.

    Good luck, and be creative!

Oh man oh man oh man! I should be working on my dominance wars entry but I think I'm going to try and enter this as well! xD

Edit - Just wanted to quickly sketch out my concept. I want to go for a sort of African-Victorian look If I end up working on this I think I'll make it much much bigger..

My thought on this one is that not all royal weddings are happy ones. This one is a marriage of conquest, she's not going to look vey happy about it.

    Nice Libertine, go for it.
Clothes, costumes, jewellery, so tempting, if only I wasn't so BAD at drapery and short of time...shite.

I've not done one of these in a while and really like the brief so think I will give it a go. Probably an obvious approach to the brief but I cant stop thinking of Iain Mccaigs concept work for queen Amidala.

So think I will try and create something in a similar vein, without just ripping it off hopefully. Not sure what I will do for the groom yet, but I'll just see If I can get the bride done first.

I was thinking along the lines of a forced official wedding for political reasons. I dont know how to make the dress though, maybe I´ll just stick with the groom.
    Nice work everybody!

Pixeltuner: I love the hair and that is some seriously wild headgear to go with it.

LibertineM: Nice idea. The way the bride is swamped under his gown works well to make him look quite overpowering too.

I realise I'll probably have to cut this down to a portrait canvas 1/3 of the width it is now. Got a bit carried away when I read about focusing on illustration this week. Imagining a royal wedding taking place around 2500 where western society is enjoying a revival of numerous old fashion periods, mainly Tudor and Edwardian.

Edit - replacing the WIP with something a little neater.

Cool topic - I am going down the fantasy route, maybe with a demonic twist, we'll see. Wip so far. Looking forward to developing this one.

My son's sixth birthday is being shared with a royal wedding and his school's 50th anniversary; I'd feel bad for his big day being overshadowed but he's getting a bike and when he sees that he won't care about anything else

Meant to post this last night but I forgot. Inspo stuff.

Some images from royal weddings in Britain, traditional Chinese wedding clothes, the upper left image is Grace Kelly marrying Prince Rainier of Monaco, the lady with the bouquet in the centre is Rania (now Queen) of Jordan marrying Abdullah II in 1993, the wedding veils on the left are Islamic (I love how they totally cover the hair, it shapes the face like a helmet - would work quite well in some futuristic sci-fi setting).

Didn't get around to including an example in this but traditional Mongolian wedding clothes are worth a look - the groom is usually dressed as elaborately as the bride. Might be thinking of something else but I think they were one of the main inspirations for the wedding clothes in Star Wars which echoeless mentioned. Hindu weddings are worth checking out for something more colourful too.

Might have to see if i can get to this one!! A particularly crazy headdress... I think at the moment i'm thinking along the lines of faery queen. I make costumes myself when i'm not painting, so i can't resist doing a really OTT design...
Oh and a painting i did of Isolde from the movie Tristan & Isolde - gorgeous costuming in that. Very Pre-Raphaelite.

Sick of hearing about this royal wedding, although us Brits get a free day's holiday so can't complain too much! I know it's stated that illustration should be the focus but I'll be sticking with a "boring" three-quarter render, whether it makes poll or not I'm not fussed too much - there's too much emphasis on illustration in CHOW in general considering it's a character design exercise, but that's just my 2 cents. Would love to see more emphasis on the design side though and maybe even a separate contest for people who want to do illustrations.

A few crits - feel free to ignore ofc..

Pepperwheel: I like the African-Victorian idea - looking forward to what you come out with.

Libertine: Great storytelling and take on the situation. The jewellery on on the bride looks almost like chains which supports the idea pretty nicely.. it's a little reminiscent of Leia's slave outfit from Return of the Jedi! Can't wait to see it finished.

Pixeltuner: Beautiful painting and original design going on. Could maybe use a little more "royal" elements though.

gdlr: Good start on the dress - some more regal and wedding type elements wouldn't go amiss though, to make it recognisable as a royal wedding dress rather than just one for a random ball or special occasion.

Urötskidoji: Be careful of your groom's outfit - he's reading like a skeleton pirate at the minute (which is quite cool but maybe not so fitting). Nice head-dress shape on the bride.

Missile: I like the idea of a futuristic setting, but it feels like the actual characters are very.. normal - they could do with a bit more "futuristic" and "royal" imagery.

LA-Fairy: Try not to worry about the environment or the rendering etc to start with - I'd recommend focusing more on the design, even if it's just in some crazy-rough sketches initially. If you took your character out onto a white background as she is there would be nothing to tell your viewer that she's royalty or is getting married. Think about what says ""wedding" to you and what says "princess" and try to incorporate some of thoses elements into the character or her outfit.

rumpenstiltzkin: Beautiful dress designs - has crown shapes and wedding-style dress shapes while also being fresh and interesting. Can't wait to see your final.

ArtByManon: Nice reference and beautfiul rendering. One thing to be careful of though is the dress colour - it makes me think of dirty or cheap cloth which doesn't say "princess", unless it was part of your story that the royal couple have eloped or have fallen on hard times maybe? Great work anyways, looking forward to seeing the final.

Anyways, here's a rough starting sketch of the prince with some notes. A lot of stuff will get changed but any feedback is much appreciated..

First CHoW! I'm actually covered in work for school, but this inspired me. Some sketches up till now, but I plan to do more before I start:

    1. Pretty vage, but I'm testing the possibility of poof here.
    2. Very classical, regal design, I guess!
    3. My favourite up till now, and I'll probably continue along this road. But then with more headgear / decoration / jewellery.

Here is a first take on this one. I like red, l like redheads, and I like redheads in red.

This one is still in progress. I may also do another take with a laser show and moneys riding dogs with saddles, but I always dig the more classical wedding portrait.

Bnoch: That's lovely. My only comment: It looks more like a portrait of a king and queen than an actual shot of a wedding. Still, I like the classical feel.

Amazing stuff, Bnoch. But maybe if you switch out the red for the more familiar white, it would read better.

I thought of a victorian/goth vampire coffin wedding at night with all the guests leaning over into an open grave (the chapel) but I started screaming for daylight after a while and don't think I'll go through with it.
