Hey Rob. Just wanted to stop by and say, "Hi," awesome and inspiring work, I love it all. It's also good to see some (equally competent) characters and enviros here amid all the creature goodness.

    *thumbs-up!

P.S. I also second what BludHund was saying about going pro. First off, you may never think you're ready (I certainly don't), but before you try you don't really have a clue. And second: nothing will push you more than a taste of the real, professional world. Recently I posted my portfolio in the "looking for work" forum, and I also tried out an ArtOrder challenge. Nothing has come out of either, but it made me realize, "Wow. I really suck, but I know exactly why that is, I know exactly where I need to be, and I will get there." That's been my experience anyway, it may not relate perfectly to your own.

Mr. Corlan: Thanks for stopping by, and for the encouragment.

flipped through some of my sketchbooks and created a mini sketch dump featuring some interesting designs I've created. I figured it's best that I showcase them. Need to do more sketches in my shetchbook, I sorta miss pencils.
btw... that bird on the right is the oldest design here, drew about 9-10 months ago, everything else is quite recent, especially the middle two which I drew today...

Hi Rob, I've been meaning to stop in here. Just wanted to congratulate you on the COW in, and to say that I really like your creature design stuff. You have a nice asthetic. On your last upload there, I really dig the pangolin/ceratopsid looking guy in the middle. It's a nice blend.

Have you ever seen this? It's a great idea starter.

You'll be participating in COW 250 right?

Good stuff, i'm really starting to be a fan of your works

Awesome Slilhuetes! I know that they are supposed to be just a step in the way up to the final image, but they got some huge aesthetic potential imo. Small subtle little thingys - really interesting stuff .

As a overall picture i like mostly your armored bird - mostly because you conquer here 2 strong colors ground, and sky one. I'm pretty sure you could use more colors to make these picture even better.

You got some pretty strong, stable technique which is a big Ace. But be carefully with getting into routine. My advice would be to try from time to time painting JUST with colors.

Or simply copy a bit old masters? http://www.wga.hu/index1.html
personally i'm a big fan of H.Daumiere http://www.wga.hu/art/d/daumier/10quixot.jpg, but there's also tons of other great old masters on wga website, and quality is quite good.

I think you should focus a bit more on the colors because they are a bit behind imo. Other that that grate work, and progress!

    Vielmond: Thanks!

tsabu: Thanks, man! Do not worry about my routine, I am constantly experimenting and refining my painting process. As for painting with just colours, it is something that I am slowly trying to push more often. When I get the chance I'll have a gander of those links you posted. Once again though, thanks! you always drop some helpful input when you stop by! I really appreciate that!

luferndes: And it's comments like these that keeps me going. Although your giving me too much credit, there is still lots for me to learn before I can consider myself top class. Keep pushing yourself and you'll get to where you need to be!

LordBalen: Thanks! Currently I am not open for any commisions sorry. But when I am it will be advertised so if your still interested by then just keep an eyepeeled.

most recent cow is finished with some detail shots...and some silhos done for chow, kinda happy with some unhappy with most, may go for more of a generic design this round, but we'll see what I come up with...

Man what were you thinking with that last COW? You must have nearly lost it painint all those fucking cracks! Hahahaha! I like the pose but I reckon you could pick a more dramatic angle, and that background really isn't selling it for me. Also I think if you had some less regular patters in the crack, maybe some much wider ones?

To be honest I don't know what I was thinking, it seemed like a good idea at the time. :/ haha
Thanks for the crits though! But I was kinda getting to the point of thinking 'okay, I'm getting tired of looking at this so let's get it done and move on.' Which is a habit I'm getting too used to.

    posting some wips....
first is a siren/harpy sketch for chow, might go for more of a 'creature' route for the head design, cuz I'm not really liking the head atm. But this is a start and we'll see what I can do to improve the design...
second is a re-design of a previous creature (or at least the head) I have been planning on tackling some of my previous designs that I've done for cow, especially now that I'm a bit better than I was when I first painted them. Also it's a good oppurtunity to improve on the concepts. Others that I'm planning to do are sound creature, red-hot speckled rock-muncher, and the faberge dragon. At least for now....

    AlexTooth: Thanks Alex!

A quick photostudy (first time without colour picking, was surprisingly easier than I thought it would be) didn't really time it, but it took between an hour to an hour and a half. Gonna be doing lots of these hopefully. Need to do some more enviro studies too.

one problem I've had with my creatures is the tendancy to put human anatomy into quadrupeds, lately I've been 'guessing' a little too much so I decided to do a quick study after finding some cat and dog muscle references. Behold my Raptor headed dog muscle study...

Very inventive creature designs you're doing there!

However, they have a nicer charm in your sketch phase rather than the finished renderings. I'd like so see you let go a little bit and have you incorporate your methods for silhouetting into your actual painting. Your most recent photostudy and post 126 are great examples of that, I feel.

    Push onward friend!

Loving those creature designs, especially the legged cobra. One thng I'd say to look out for though is overdetailing the entire thing.. it usually helps for focus if you just hint at most of the detail and maybe render it a little more in the main focal points. Also saves a lot of time too. Looking forward to seeing more!

Farquad: Thanks, man! I'm def trying to ease that into my painting routine, still too comfortable with drawing first and getting the idea in front of me before rendering.

Veshkau: Thanks, Vesh! I am constantly guilty of getting lost in the details too much. I think a few speedpaints should help me with that though.

Angel Intheuk: Will do! Glad you liked my stuff!

some wips and silhos and whatnot for chow, eow, and idw...
    what?! no cows!!! haha
also some progress on my re-design....those details again....
and a random creature, design is kinda boring, and rendering is crap but though I'd show it anyways...

Sheesh, your creature thumbnails are amazing!

If I had to critique, I agree with veshkau, that it would make your finished pieces even more interesting if you started using focal points and rendered that spot to the complete max, and then sort of blurred out or used less detail on the rest of the image. You don't have to do a ton less detail, just make it very apparent that you are using a good focal point.

A great example of this is that bird above. That follows this to the letter!

Keep up the great work, can't wait to see more.

Very nice COW entries you are killing it every round. I agree with Mat and Veshkau, try to focus on interest zones instead of apply a very detailed and general rendering, it´s something I need to apply to myself. Want to see more!

Matt: Thanks, man! Trying to get out of the detailing trap, something that I have been noticing lately in my work.

Quinn Simoes: Thanks man! Appreciate the visit! I may in future render out the central creature in those sketches!

Ricardo Robles: Thanks! Wanna see more see below...

Finally managed to finish a chow (my third) after a long while of participating, but never submitting. Topic was Sin, as in seven deadly sins. I chose lust but this giant frog dude came and ate her XO haha....decided to use the wide-mouth frog for gluttony because they tend to try to eat anything that moves, even if it's bigger than they are....ribbit....

Art is not about competing against others and being better than everyone else, but it is about competing against yourself and discovering your greatest potential!
