LastGen: Thank you! It's true hehe, I'm never happy with the stuff I do, wether this is a good or a bad thing I'm not entirely sure yet. This is a big reason why I can't finish anything - even if I feel at the beginning that I had something good going on as the painting progresses I just start to hate it. Probably because I have a bad workflow and don't know how to effectively progress from sketchy pieces into more finished work. (This won't really get better without finishing pieces now does it? Hehe) Also I'm too eager to jump into the fun stuff and don't spend enough time on the beginning stages so I hit huuuuuge problems few hours in every time.
I'm a student at the moment - studying things I'm not really interested in. Still feel like thats all I got at the moment though as there are no decent art schools where I am and I'm not content with the quality of the work I produce. If I just were consistent... I feel like when I'm producing pieces on the highest level I can hit, they're okay. Too bad I'm not consistent at all and at times I feel like I'm doing the same kind of shit I did a year ago.
MeteorCat: Thanks man! Yeah it sucks. For the last week and a half I've been feeling so bummed for various reasons that I haven't been able to paint. Thanks for the kind words
Page 20! Thanks for all the support guys. Next stop, page 50!
Been doing some traditional crap with pencils and oils (30min in I broke my palette knife and just called it quits, freaking thind didn't even last for a month. I guess I'm too rough with it.) and some digital stuff I won't be posting.
Ok that was bad.
I'll let myself out.
Both Dan dos Santos and Bobby Chui admitted that they begin to dislike their paintings from a couple of minutes to hours after they finish them so you're not alone. They think it might just be something that makes them better artists.
I'm not sure if this makes you feel any better but I truly know what you mean. I've decided to give most of my paintings to my family because I can't stand to see them any more. As time goes I keep seeing mistakes and things I'm not fond of.
Hang in there mate!
Awesome dedication to working hard and improving all throughout your sketchbook!! No crits, just keep it up.
MeteorCat: haha yeah. I guess that is the way it goes. Just gotta push forward, it's not like I have anything else I'm interested in! Thanks for the encouraging words.
Amarok: Thank you! I've tried my best
No more crabs. I tried but couldn't make it work hah. Also tried the dragon piece again, no dice. If I want to continue on the subject I should just redo it from scratch.
MeteorCat: Thanks man! It's been fun
Satu: Much thanks! Will do
Mila: Thanks! You're right about the values, they were off. Thanks for the crit!
I ended up erasing the whole thing and doing something else. It's not perfect but it's a lot better than it was. I should try to think how to get a bit more feeling into my paintings, they usually turn out pretty boring. I think I should try to do some more dramatic stuff and push the perspectives more to get more more intimidating stuff. Theres really no stories getting through the paitnings. Plus this one doesn't really show any movement, should try to fix that.
Anyway, just some poking around on this one. I'll just call it done soon and stop wasting more time. Did some quick studies which won't see the light of day.
Just some reaaaaaaaally quick still-lifes. Felt like doinh something so I was pretty much just spinning my head around and spending some minutes drawing the stuff around.
And some scribbling done while just thinking about stuff.
Good work, man... just did a quick recap of the thread again... really can feel your urgent need to improve... it comes through.
I feel you on wanting/needing to have your creative work express more color, emotion, etc. Maybe loosen up and allow yourself to just draw a bunch of crazy stuff in a sketchbook you keep for yourself. It may shed light on what it is you really want to draw.
This one was really nice
It kind of shows how you're progressing with color and variation.
I like this one too...
...but the placement of the first section of tail feels off... it feels like it should go back a bit further in space. Just running my eyes back the creature's spine, and then turning back in space, I arrive a little further back when trying to figure out where the tail should occupy space.
Just the first section of tail.... the bit you see under the left wing (our right).
The rest of the pic looks really cool.
Good work... and hope you finally break through the barriers you're feeling.
Nice studies, man!
Gpozzo: Thanks man!
p sage: Thanks for the crit! You're right about the tail - I've actually worked on that one alot more but I wasn't happy where it was going so I just ditched it. Regarding the other stuff you said I almost feel like theres a small switch in my head turned off regarding many things, especially colour. Sometimes I feel like it's just some really really small piece if information that I'm missing and I just don't know what it is. Kinda feels like if I just stretched my arm I could grab it but I just don't know what it is.
LastGen: Thanks man! I'm honored you feel that way - I'm just slowly trying to go forward. Theres so many skilled and hard-working people on this site that it often becomes almost suffocating.
Mila & Brendan Draney: Thanks guys!
Heres some screencaps. I haven't been doing as much studies as of late. I kinda just started to get the feeling I wasn't getting anything out of them. Drawing from life teaches you so much more but also requires so much more effort. I'm trying to find the good things out of photostudies again - hopefully I'll find something.
NickyBeats: Thanks man! I certainly wish so
Mila: Thanks man!
I have no idea what I'm doing.
Little update. Just doing some rendering and trying different things with the bg and everything. Not much of a change but I have to stop for today.
Sorry for the boring updates. Still poking around with the piece although I haven't put much work into it as I don't feel like rendering. The image is kinda boring so I'm mainly just messing around with the composition, trying to toss in different objects and stuff and trying to get it to work. Also just some quick scribbling.
MeteorCat: Thanks man!
Giorge: Thank you!
Heres some scribblywip. Nothing fancy, just some relaxing painting and poking around. Might continue it, or not.
