    CHoW#241 :: The Yakuza

    CHoW#241 :: The Yakuza
    Design a member of the Yakuza syndicate.
    DEADLINE: SUNDAY, April 24th 2011
    Deadline is Sunday, at 9:00 pm (GMT+1) Check your timezone!
    DESCRIPTION
    The Yakuza are a crime syndicate in Japan who have been runnng the Japanese underworld for thousands of years. This weeks challenge is to create a member of this syndicate. The illustration of the piece is just as important as the development of the character so plan your image carefully!!!. As always, images which are not well developed will not make it to the poll!

    Things to remember:
    • Think about the inllustration of the piece But do not forget the character design!
    • Can be any setting (Modern, Steampunk, SciFi, Fantasy....) but must be clearly japanese.
    • These are dark, violent and seedy people so make it clear in your design.
    • Can be male OR female
    • Only ONE character in the scene. Show the violence of the character without any other people or bodies in the image.

    Oh this is fun...might get around to entering this. Trouble is getting an entry that is going to stand out from a bunch of other muscle bound tattooed guys.

    Fox - nice sketch man, his sword holding arm looks a bit short, especially the forearm. i like the cocky attitude though.

    heres just a few doodles to get my brain moving again.

    Sounds like a great topic. My thought process: I doubt I'd be able to come up with a totally badass Yakuza that hasn't already been done before, so I'll probably explore the genre flexibility, similar to the Fairy-Tales retold. I'm thinkin either 1920's retro, or near future cyberpunk-ish, not sure yet. Either way, research will be key!

    Don't know what I plan exactly, but something theatrical and stagey with a swirl of red fabric. It sort of beats the point of stealthy and assassin but still experimenting at this point.

    Sorry my pic didn't load.

    NickyBeats: Nice doodles! I like the chap with the eyepatch.

    Going along the lines of a disguised yakuza gynoid with her robotic form shown in reflections (is it still within the rules to have multiple figures if it's the same character?).

    Indicating a violent nature is hard with a solitary character so I'm piling on sadistic tattoos. Suehiro Maruo art, ritual suicide and tentacles.

    @Missile reflections of the same character are fine, but no 'new' characters. Even though your design is not a direct reflection, we will allow it as it is still the same character

    Not for this topic I'm afraid. We would just like to see the single character

    Didn't think I'd enter this week, but the idea of black tattoos floating against a white background being the only way to tell the man's form floated through my mind's eye and this is the very rough wip i knocked out.

    Saw the topic and knew I'd have to try my hand at this one . Now I finally have a use for reading all that violent (but incredibly well drawn) manga. I swear, that train station piece I'm working on is never getting finished at this rate xD....

    Woopwoop. I know this isn't allowed but they look so sweeeeeet together... I'll probably give this one more detail pass and then see which one I'll use for the final crop, I've got more stuff to work on this week.

    Here is a quick inspiration board I threw together. I love all the detail these crazy kids put into some of their outfits. I'm thinking of doing a girl that is a darker interpretation of some of this stuff.

    by the way, Pixeltuner, awesome stuff already. You're always got something amazing and practically finished (by my standards) on like the first day. Way to be on top of things.

    To continue themonet's idea, here's another inspiration thing!

    There's this wonderful genre called 'pinky violence' in the history of Japanese cinema, chiming in around the late sixties to early seventies, focusing on girl gangs and female Yakuzas, usually with sexual overtones. Not strictly complete Yakuza but it's related and ties into crime in Japan. So here's some pictures.

    Won't be everybody's cup of tea of course but I find it a refreshing image to put up to 'Yakuza' if you get a bit bored of the more obvious and gritty business-like male side of it.

    Another sketch. The first seemed pretty generic- don't know if this is any better.

    NickBeats: Looooove those faces! They're all so different and full of personality!

    Pixeltuner: Your speed and awesomeness, it shames me.

    Nice. You should have a look at RoboGeisha, even though she is a geisha, it may give you some ideas of...Japanese robot..kind of things, and how they like to do it? You'll just have to see it anyway lol

    Glad someone likes Suehiro Maruo, his art is gruesome and funny!

    ~If you're going to enter, do you have to post up wips in here or can it all just go in the final thread?
