    CHoW#239 :: War Criminal

    DESCRIPTION
Leading a pointless civil war in an underdeveloped country, this ruthless man, commanding a guerilla army, rips off poor civilians and wages war against any opponent. He lives a rich life, constantly sapping away the country's resources, making the poor people around live a very difficult life.

Design a war criminal in an underdeveloped country.

    Things to remember:
    • Can only be male
    • We do not want to see any high class luxury kingpings or similar
    • Make the character look like hes living in an underdeveloped country
    • Style is modern and era is something from 1970-2011

    Good luck, and be creative!

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    PLEASE NOTE:
Over the last few CHoW challenges there has been an increase in the number of 'illustration' style submissions which have focused more on the setting and additional elements than on the character design itself. Due to this, we will be starting to be more selective with which images go to poll. This is not to say that you may not create a background or present the character in a more illustrative way, however entries will have to adhere to the following:

    - The character MUST be the focal point of the image.
    - The character must be designed to a level where it still clearly fits the brief if the background is removed
    - Additional characters are allowed providing they do not draw focus away from the main character.

CHoW stands for Character of the week and so we are looking for well designed characters not just people in a situation or environment related to the theme!

PLEASE NOTE THE RULES AND THE DEADLINE TIME

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    DEADLINE:
    SUNDAY, April 3rd, 2011

Deadline is Sunday, at 9:00 pm (GMT +1). (Check your timezone!)

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    THE RULES
If you do not stick to these 6 simple rules, you will not be added to the poll.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

    1) FOLLOW THE TOPIC.
It's about designing the character of the topic. The environment or side characters are far less important.

    2) SHOW AT LEAST ¾ OF YOUR DESIGN.

This is not an illustration contest, but a design contest. Show your whole design!

    3) POST YOUR FINAL IN THE FINALS THREAD.

    4) INCLUDE WIPS WITH YOUR FINAL.

Show your work in progress and post (links to) this in the finals thread!

    5) SAVE YOUR FILES IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT.
    Chow##_Nickname
    example: "CHOW#100_Oblio.jpg"

    No final.jpgs please!

    6) PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC

(you can add CA logo, etc).

About quality - as general rule: if your shapes and values are not decent - you are out. Watch proportions, perspective etc. we need perfectly readable shapes and coherent, consistent values.

    _____________

BE PROFESSIONAL - only finished and good quality entries will be taken to the poll. Elixy and Parsakoira will make the selection.
Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

    ON GETTING TO POLL
    -------------------------
    NEW ROUND RULE: WIPS PLEASE!
    -------------------------
    SUBMISSION FORMAT REMINDER

PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!

Even though it is supposed to be set within a modern setting, does the character have to be historically accurate? What I mean to say is: does he have to be from a country that would be considered a "developing country" from the time period 1970-2011, or can he be from a made-up country and shown with modern equipment?

This is a bit too much like the last theme for me I think. I'm tired of gritty, I want to draw something more fluffy now.

@Partisan - Those photos are amazing. How did you track all of 'em down? Just Google images, or do you have specific sites that have such awesome reference?

I love how the guy above is using the gun almost as an extension of, and replacement for, his own manhood by strategically placing it directly in front of his crotch. My guess is, this guy has a really small d*ck.

I'm not too sure about this one.

Very rough sketch. Going for a triangular composition with a lot of deep shadows. Disgusting pig of a general preparing to befoul a young girl, artist capturing the fake heroic portrait, guard at the ready, weeping parents powerless to resist.

So the two options going to be pulled out of the hat are

... The Bono look alike Colonel Gadaffi

    or

... African milicia or area boys.

Here is my Sketchbook. Please have a look if you have time. Thanks.

sadly there is no "site of superawesome reference deluxe" for such topics ^^ they are just googled ( with a little background knowing what to look for ) but maybe we as a community should try to put up a reference-portal/site or something could be very helpful for the future...just thinking of

I think the rules being that specific this time the goal is actually to capture a real life person not an alien or something ...but thats just me ^^

I going to keep this simple. I want to capture his look and essence in a simple pose so that it's clear he's a ruthless dirty bastard regardless of his surroundings.

    To answer a few questions:

Q Does it have to be Human?
A Partisan is right on! This week the challenge is to create a 'real' character so yes, for this week at least we would like to see just human designs

Q Even though it is supposed to be set within a modern setting, does the character have to be historically accurate? What I mean to say is: does he have to be from a country that would be considered a "developing country" from the time period 1970-2011, or can he be from a made-up country and shown with modern equipment?
A The country does not have to be a real place, but the equipment (weapons/clothing/technology) does have to be suited to the specific era.

This weeks topic is designed to really push people out of their comfort zones. The challenge is NOT to create an illustration showing what kind of a man he is. The challenge is to design the character himself. We will be looking for key aspects such as:
    - Posture
    - Facial and body attributes
    - Attire
    - Colors
    - Attitude
Again we are NOT looking for an illustration of a war criminal, we are looking for the actual design of the man himself!

Totally with you on the middle one. Although I'm rather fond of the baseball cap on the third Give him a hyena guard dog and you've got yourself one brutal guy!!!

I'd say the left guy, because he's the only one who really stands out as a leader. The middle one is more of a nutcase and the right one looks Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury in a way :p

Yeah, I'm with Pixeltuner on that one, the left one seems like the best leader. The middle guy looks more like the blubbering henchman. His upper body is just to small in comparison to his baggy legs. He seems weak. Awesome sketch style though.

léJeanX3 : Rocking sketches. If you think about it, if you tightened those up you'd already have very excellent concept art. But knowing how these contests go - nothing short of a full-blown portrait painting will do.

Awesome topic! Had a flashback to vice's guide to Liberia, so here's my Liberian warlord - King Smiles. Extremely rough, still gotta draw him holding an AK, fix anatomy, folds, etc. Hopefully I can actually finish this week!

Oh, and if anyone is interested I highly recommend Vices guide to Liberia, very interesting. Warning though, it can get pretty graphic. http://www.vbs.tv/watch/the-vice-gui...liberia-1-of-8

So, here are my thoughts... After the war ended the general goes back home to his wife and kids hoping to forget his previous actions. After months of struggling he can't deal with the guilt any longer. One afternoon he sits in his favourite chair and takes one last look at the photo of his family before taking his life...

Some of the research and entries will probably be reminiscent of CHOW 115, the East African Warlord challenge, but the topic is not so place-specific as that one. It will be an interesting challenge, though one that will require a degree of research...!
