Semi-regular Self Portraits
graphite, 20x20cm each
I'm trying to do these on a regular basis.

I'm looking so stern because it took me six tries tonight to get something even remotely resembling a human face.

Your proportions and (I'm guessing, judging from the different portraits,) likeness look great! Your hatching could use some work. The number one tip I can give is to do strokes in only one direction, always following the directionality of the form. Also, it may be tempting to entirely box in the shadow shapes with the line work, but I would recommend only drawing lines for the hard edges and cast shadows (as opposed to form shadows.) And remember! hard edges for cast shadows, soft edges for form shadows!

Thank you, Jacob!
I tried to follow your advice here. I'm not quite sure if I did it right, though. What do you think?
Also I didn't nail the proportions this time. Though I don't quite see where the mistake lies. Somehow the face doesn't seem to match up with the rest of the face (angle? size? relative location?). I played around with it for a while in Gimp, resizing and rotating parts, but I couldn't find a good solution. Any advice?

Thanks. Now that you mention it, the problem with the mouth seems glaringly obvious.
Here are some more:
Unfortunately I seem to be getting worse at capturing my likeness. So far the second one in my original post still is the closest to how I actually look.
I need to work on my patience. When confronted with large areas to shade, I tend to fall back to scribbling lots of lines without thinking about them first.
I started experimenting with ink in #4, to force me to be more conscious about each line. The two on the right are quite skewed, but I'm quite happy with the other three. Especially the one in the middle.
EDIT: instead of just pointing out an error I found in the first one, I tried to fix it, re-scanned and re-uploaded it. Still not perfect, but much better.
