SinnerMan - Man, your background is badass. So's that weapon. Think his legs look a bit short, though.

SpasmMan - Cute, but doesn't really seem post-apocalyptic. It also feels a bit flat, like each piece is lit individually, but the figure as a whole doesn't quite gel together? Especially on the white areas. Finally, the smoke looks much too solid, and the black outline isn't helping.

    jrbarker
    - I think you're having trouble with his legs - the bent leg makes it look like he could topple right over. If you want to keep it bent, at least move his feet apart a little?

Progresssssss. Starting to realize how little I actually know about lighting environments. Any crits would help!

Yet another WIP! I added an apprentice character as a companion.
Paladins sometime during their life take on an apprentice and teach them the way of a Holy warrior.
This paladin found an orphaned young girl and is training her to defend herself and others.

There really is a lot of good work on this thread. That's probably why I keep coming back.

Anyway, 2nd wip here. Just roughly blocked stuff in.

My point is that a 'paladin', as seen in history and in fantasy, has always been a 'holy' warrior. Since the rules to the CHOW's clearly state this should be approached as if it was made for a client, I don't see why one would deviate from the concept based on personal views. If a client asked you to draw a guy holding a cross, I'd assume you'd do it too, right?

Hope that didn't come across as being too critical, but I think it's very worthwhile to explore subjects outside of your comfort zone. I will admit there's even a limit to that for myself, though, but I don't think CA will have any threads related to hardcore pornography anytime soon. :B

EDIT: Also, full crits in the finals thread for enereyone should I have time, I promise.
no no ^^ I think you got me wrong on this one, I just focus on another part, yes I do dislike religions as such but I simply dont think that the religion is the key element that qualifies a guy for being a paladin. First and foremost in all description they are peers with special rights and duties, it also may refer to the inner circle of a knights-chapter . So yes the traditional paladin belongs to a religion as this was simply like the world looked like when the word and its meaning appeared , but this is the post apocalyptic age.

So for me the key element of this are the virtues knights stand for. One of this virtues is to care for the derelicts and to protect them even at the cost of loosing one`s life. Even when I think about the fantasy-paladin the defining characteristic for me would be that he simply tries to make the world a better place by defending (spreading) the good things in the world against the bad ones. I dont try to make a big deal about this whole religion thing, I simply really dont think that this is the most important part, and if I would make this for a costumer I would make it the exact same way ^^

I dont think that one should just try to stay as close as possible to the specifications, I DO think that you should try to make something that fits the description but I also think that as an artist you should try to make up your mind and find a solution or a justification that isnt the most obvious one, you are not just a illustrator for someones ideas, no, you are a part of the development itself and the further you try to go the more exiting the result will be.

You sure should stay within the boundaries of the given topic ( i gave a lot of speeches concerning this particular problem in other CHoW`s ) but I think you get more exiting results if you try to dig deeper and to find a reasonable but moving explanation for your work.

And given that thought - I do think that I am still within the boundaries of this weeks CHoW.

and dont get me wrong, this is just really the way I see this, its not written in anger or as a rant. ^^

    so long
    Seb

Chate Noire Even without color I think it's pretty fabulous what you've done with your paladin...

The lighting, the shapes, details etc. are all very cool; they're also very polished. Shiny!

Ok, so hope i can finish in time, im putting off a sociology assignment right now hehehe, gonna wait last minute for it, heres an update:

I figured, former priest, so kinda lean, so in a world where your going to have to either be able to take some hits or be quick, i figured id make him agile, so i dropped the sword, and gave him a catholic incense burner rigged with knives to disorient the demons while he swings it like a flail... had to do it hehe

Partisan: I think I see where you're coming from now. Thanks for explaining it, and don't worry - you didn't come across as angry at all. Glad you've shed some (holy? ;p) light on the subject.

This. I'm banging my head against the wall with my nun picture.... But then that also stems from my lack of skills. Shows me right for trying such an involved composition while my abilities are so rusty.

Details! The sword is super flat right now. Something's still off with the light...? And I'm still avoiding those feet.

So I took Trog's advice and changed the arms completely. Made them a little less "stylized" and comic book-like. I guess you could say. And Revidescent advice and changed the legs (again lol) so they are spread apart like in the beginning. But this time I think I got the balance right, like he's putting a little more more weight on the left leg. Anyway, here's the update. I'll fix the flag and render out the body out a touch more. And I still haven't really worked on the birds at all. Sort of avoiding those. Still debating a ruined building in the background but I think it does need something...

(By the way, in this world I created, I thought it would be more likely a warrior would try to find some "modern" body armor from before the apocalypse, than try to make chain mail or run around wearing a metal gauntlets. Maybe his gear is passed down through the generations. Who knows. But that's why it's fun to see everyone's take!)

vrt: Thanks for the feedback...contemplating about the religious symbolism at the moment.

Pimpwacker: Thanks, Was fun working on it...in a subliminal message it looks like a big mouth going to devour her which symbolizes the harsh post apocalyptic environment...or something like that

    Some background work for now..

yeah paladin does not have to be coming from a religious background.. in many past interpretations paladins were just warriors who resembled good natured knights and nothing more.. as far as why my paladin's armor is somwhat symmetrical can be easily argued. My simple point is that to make things symmetrical is jsut as easy or at times even easier to make than assymetrical design. So if I was personally a paladin in post apocalyptic setting i wouldnt mind making my armor symmetrical - there is A LOT of scraps of metal and other things to work from why not make the armor symmetrical thus making it equal in wieght from both sides? and i agree with Partisan - who said a paladin ablsoluty have to be religious...

On the contrary i also agree with the fact that there are a lot of entries that do not resemble the "paladin" aspect of the concept at all.. I hope that is going to be taken into account during the voting stage

Shorinji_Knight - I like the atmosphere you created with the background, it definitely feels post-apocalyptic. But there are two issues you might want to think about:
    1. The background is quite wide, and the character is confined to its right side, leaving a whole lot of empty space on the left. Since this is a character challenge, maybe you should crop the image to focus on the character, and find a way to tighten the background around her.
    2. The background is clearly modern, while your paladin's outfit looks very much out of a fantasy realm (save for the roller blades and gun). It feels a little out of context.

Urgh.... update. I think I've hit the spot where I have to grow a spine and force myself to continue... I blame my lack of an efficient working method.

Lots to be done still... refining cloak and helmet and finishing the demon... lots of edges to be tweaked... And then it's background fire and more lighting things to solve.

I originally planned to incorporate more religious symbols, from various religions (like a Hand of Fatima, an aunkh, a Tibettan seashell...) but now I think that's going to be too much clutter.
You win this time, Christians. This time...

    great round here again.

M, loved to see your progress in this and the last Chow. Cool stuff.

Partisan, cool piece, love the idea with the dead end sign and the red light to pull the focus on da face. gute arbeit mann

Chate Noire, i think his right foot could be a bit more planted on the floor and maybe the foot resting on the rubble too, in such a way that it becomes more clear where the weight is carried. i like the stylised look a lot, cool piece.

i did a pencil sketch for this yesterday that i'd like to share, finishing this on time will probably be tough, since there's tons to be done here, but here it goes anyway, comments welcome :

Thanks for the critisim. You are probably right about my focus being a bit far. To tell the truth I mostly participate in these chows for personal inspration with the goal of creating portfolio pieces. That's why they tend to be more illustrations and less character sheets. I told myself this time I was just gonna slap a simple background on it, but I guess I got carried away.

As far as the armour design goes I admit I was trying to be a bit cliche. I knew it would challange a lot of people's views on what post-apocalyptic should look like. I set the time as about 80yrs in the future so the buildings would be simular to present day, but this is after the coming robot age. Getting fancy armour is no problem because there are thousands of robots of all kinds of designs out there to harvest parts from.

I do appreciate the critisim! Half the time, I wonder why I bother to post wips on here, when all you hear are crickets chirping for a reply.
