Topic: Ferryboat of the River Styx
Deadline: Wednesday, March 23
In Greek and Roman mythology, the River Styx was the boundary between our world and the underworld. Souls would have to cross this river in order to move on, and to do so, they would take a ferry. Those who had not had a proper burial could not cross.
Show us what the boat that exists in both the human realm and Hades looked like- has it kept up with the times or does it look the way it did over two thousand years ago?

So, here is it...I was thinking some sort of mix of old viking ships, and like in that dantes inferno game/anime, skeletal front part (Holding some sort of lamp, making light to to guide souls through dark styx...)

An explanation of my work and thoughts that went into it:
The ferryman has gotten very busy over the years, now that there are literally billions of people living and dying on Earth. Many of these souls can't afford passage. To solve both of these issues, he has created an entire flotilla of oar ships to ferry souls across to the underworld, allowing a number of souls to work off their debt by literally becoming part of the craft themselves. These souls are the materials from which the ferries are made, and by which they are powered. This doesn't show up too well in my image yet because I haven't started putting in any details at all, but they will be made of bodies, bones, etc.
This rough sketch is merely to get the basic perspective and general forms in place.

Mine's pretty rough still; I'm just blocking in the forms. Not worrying about details yet. I'd like to make the overall craft design more interesting but I'm not sure how.

Hey everyone. I liked the idea that the "boat over the river of styx" might look like some really lame theme park ride, so I drew this piece. Heavily inspired by the car in Grimm Fandango.
Si_Swe, I love that idea! May as well get your money's worth if it's the last ride you'll get, right?
Progress on mine; I changed it a bit to make it look more Greek and also hopefully more interesting than it was. I still have a lot of rendering to go, but you can just start to tell that the craft are made out of poor dead souls.
Eclectix - Thanks, man! Your is looking nice and atmospheric. Maybe soften up the textures towards the back to give a better impression of receding space and to ease the eyes a bit. The repeated texture takes away from the great rendering on the front of the boat.
RabbiSatan - Your reminds me a lot of the Dark People from The Longest Journey, an adventure game from the early '00s. The vibrance of the background is really killing the read on the boat, though. Maybe work on balancing that out.
Saurabhinator - Very cool start. Are those rockets on it?
Naxfish - Cool design. I might use some reference on those red lights, give them a bit more of an effect on the surfaces than they have right now. Maybe think about cleaning up the lines on the lanterns.
Quick update, got some values in there now.

So this is what i have now. Is there any way you guys think i can get it better?
Rabbi Satan: what a slim design. Looks really different from the usual slow pace that people associate with crossing the river styx.
Eclectix: Can't wait to see the details!
Si_Swe, if it were a ride at Disneyland I'd definitely wait in line to ride it! The shadows on the skull look a little flat to me, though; you might want to push those values a bit darker esp where the cheek drops a shadow on the jaw. Some darker details in those deep shadows would help make the image pop I think.
Here's what I've been wasting my time doing; details, details, details. Most of them probably won't even be visible at screen size. Oh, well.

Really nice stuff on there Eclectix. I took your advice to heart, and boosted the contrast a bit there. I hope it turned out alright. Final is posted, now.
@Si_Swe - Looks like something out of a Lucas Arts adventure game. I hope you know what I'm talking about. Looks great
@Eclectix - Great atmosphere. The skeletons that make up the hull of the ship are rowing it - did I read that right?
@Naxfish - I'm not sure why, but I think it looked better in the stages before the rendering. Maybe it is the background or something, but the rendered image looks flatter.

I have a question for you folks. This might be a long shot but since I've hit this problem here with my IDW again I figured I'ld go ahead and ask (I've been having this for quite some time : every time I post to the net/open a file in the windows image viewer as well).
Basically, any given image I've painted in Photoshop becomes quite dark and loses a lot of detail/contrast as soon as I take it out of Photoshop. It's really bothersome 'cause there's no way for me to know how the piece is gona turn out once I post it to the net as it looks quite different in Photoshop. I don't think it has anything to do with the proof settings (fiddled with them to no avail) so I thought it might be Adobe Gamma but I took it out of the startup and that hasn't fixed anything for me.
I've included a screencapture of the same image of my Riverboat IDW entry so you can see what I mean. It's the exact same image, the window above has it opened on the net, the window below is in Photoshop. Now even the one in photoshop is gona come out quite dark here as I've posted the image but at least you'll see the difference between the two.
Any suggestions ? Pleeease ???
I know other people have had this problem- there were a couple of threads on it in the Photoshop section a while back. I don't remember the reason off the top of my head, but if you do a search or two you should be able to find the solution.
Hey Rambozo, I've experienced the same issue for a while, too. I'm pretty sure it's just the way that the data is stored online, in the browser. Take any jpeg off the internet and throw it into PS, and it's vibrance goes way up. Part of it is the way that jpegs compress (rather than having 3 levels for RGB, they compress Green into the Blue level, and give the empty level to black and white tonal differences) which will always wash out greens and yellows a bit. But I think it may actually just be something with the internet in general. I always just boost the saturation a tiny bit on my images before I save them as jpegs, and when I post them, it looks pretty well how it should...
EDIT: Just reread and saw you're having the opposite of this problem... Actually I don't know how to solve that one...
