Spent some time over the weekend really pushing a portrait study then doing an application of it. It all kinda looks like shit but I'm glad at least I applied something of what I studied More portrait studies will follow.

It's so hard to find the right words to criticize, I often feel things effortlessy, naturally, but I need to search why... It's especially true for your applied skull study in #184, I feel it's somewhat skewed but can't say anything more useful.

Well let's see your last one. The photo study looks good, well the eyes are a bit different, it seems you don't know their structure enough yet. Eyes are highly important and we humans tend to see flaws there more easily and even photo references can't help enough, there are really tiny subtle things going there. The eyes in the applied study is even flawier, think about the 3d shape of eyes, get some good tutorial that shows thing better than a photo... The ears is too high and the mouth is a bit loosey-wavy and a tad too low but the whole thing isn't look bad at all Keep it up

More stuff, shitty ref image, but wanted to focus on the ear since it looked like shit in the previous study. Also a shit application of the skin and ear study. Trying to limit myself to a few hours per study.

Some really great progress! Remember to constantly be on guard for any misplaced measuring. That's coming from someone who's still learning as well

He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.

    Hey dracken,
nice to see improvement going on
It is interesting you do so many photo studies- do you feel your learn something from doing them, and if yes, what? Colour? Value, form?
People in the CC Centre tend to say studies from photos must be made carefully, to not copy mindlessly. I am just wondering what your approach is.

    Cheers!

Of course I only copy mindlessly, the less work you put in your studies the more you'll learn just kidding!!

If you copy mindlessly you won't learn anything, completely agree with the CC center on that one. So whenever I copy an image I spend a lot of time trying to understand what I'm seeing, understanding the underlying forms of whatever I'm studying and then I apply it latter without looking at the original. Then I compare the two (the memory and the original as well as my copy and the original) and try to figure out where I have problems, then I work on that.

A lot of my studies have skewed proportions as well as value problems, so I started doing black and white value studies more often and I am now spending a few months on anatomy, making sure to learn more about proportions, measuring and how to use correct perspective.

Also the studies I have shown here were for the purpose of learning how to paint fur, or how to get a 3d shape just right in perspective. For each study I make sure there is a reason behind it, then apply the study in a personal piece. You have to understand what you're doing when copying then reinforce that by applying it. Hope that makes sense about my approach to art.

Also I try to use still life's as often as possible, for example to learn more about fur I did some photo studies, then I studies a fur coat, the I applied that on a personal project (they should be up there, not sure if I uploaded them yet, but yeah... everything I do had a purpose...in theory)

Anyhow, haven't updated in a while because I've been doing anatomy traditionally. Finally got around to taking photos of the drawings and here are a few. Will upload more soon.

These are from Hampton's book on anatomy, life drawing sessions and photos as well as imagination.

Just wanted to get this up, sorry for the double post. Looks like Hampton should be done by mid April if I manage to keep this pace up. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Mostly arms from imagination and after Hampton

did some more life drawings and decided to share my process for an imagination drawing.

Step 1: Gesture, loose and quick.

Step 2: Put down landmarks and try to notice any big proportion errors

Step 3: Start defining big shapes

    Step 4: Work on muscles

    Step 5: Profit

Also here are some 5 minute life drawing images

    10 minutes

and the 20 minutes one at the end of the session....man I messed her neck up really badly...
