Brown's Sketchbook of assorted randomness
Hi everyone, I'm André Brown. I've lurked around here for ages, figured it was about time I posted something.
I work in a small videogame company in Portugal, which has been a great learning experience, but it does suck up a lot of time, and I've sorta been neglecting my personal work, I'm hoping this sketchbook will help fix that.
So yeah, this is the first of hopefully many posts.
I'll kick things of with some goblin guys, not sure I'll ever get around to rendering the bottom four.

Haha, i like what i'm seeing so far! Even though they're cartoony little goblins, it looks like you've got your anatomy down, and your sense of form in those renderings are really nice as well. Hope to see more from you soon!

The design for these guys is really pleasing to my eye, they are well balanced and the form and value you have on them is great. I can really get a sense of movement from the line work too. I can't wait to see more. =)

I was asked to to post some wips, so here's a quick example of how my process usually goes.
I'll start of with a quick sketch or thumbnail, I'll build out the basic shapes and volumes from it, and from there I flesh out the figure, refine the anatomy and so on. Once I have some relatively clean lineart, its time to drop down some color.
Occasionally some of the charm, simplicity and spontaneity of the original sketch is lost in the process, at which point I furrow my brow, clench my teeth, and start over, refining the design or exploring different possibilities.
If I don't have a clear idea of what exactly I want, instead of a line sketch, I'll start with some silhouettes, pick the ones I find interesting and build the figure from them. The goblins for example started out this way.
I'll try to post wips of future pieces, seems like a good way to analyze my own work.

Your character designs are great! i must say they lose a bit when you try to render it in a more realistic way. This almost-cartoonish look makes them really original. maybe i didn´t see enough of your art to judge... anyways, the style rocks. Will wait a bit to give you 5..
My favorites, this goblins in the top of the page and this bw undead shaman?
keep sharing!

Great start to a SB, loving the creature designs. Particularly the way they capture realistic anatomy with a cartoonish charm.
Awesome stuff.

Wow. cute characters, those goblins and stuff. Just the right amount of playfulness with clear expression and anatomy! I'd love to see those characters in action, interacting.

Ok thats all the time I'm putting into this guy, not crazy about the way he turned out, but it was good practice.
I did a bit of experimenting along the way, so this process isn't as organized as I would usually paint. I need to work on my values, they look a little timid.
Medusoid: Thanks. Yea environments are definitely something I need to work on, hopefully I'll have some free time to work on some speedpaints.
Ricardo Robles: Thanks man, you're probably right, I'm still trying to find a balance between a more cartoonish flat colored look and an almost realistic render that doesn't suffocate the original line art. I enjoy painting both styles so its not easy.
I was hoping to post more frequently, but its been a busy week. Hopefully next week will be more productive.

Tjena André!
Man o man the sharks are ace! More of that stuff! Love the posh one, I can just see him suspiciously leaving a saloon tucking his napkin in after a good burp. And when you look through the swinging saloon doors you see he's taken a good chunk from the barmaids waist, leaving her i a pile of blood.
