Thread: Vablo's Sketchbook
February 2nd, 2011 #1
I've been around here for some time now, mostly stalking in the shadows like a ninja. Anyway, I thought I'd finally start my own sketchbook, so comments and critiques are very welcome!
I'll start with some sketches, studies and finished pictures.

Jr.Molcak: Thanks, I think I should continue that painting when I have the time.
Currently I'm quite busy with pretask for school and also some commissions are on the way, so I might not be able to upload that much stuff soon. But anyways, here are some recent sketches I've been working on for a while.

Hiya Vablo! .. Do I know you from somewhere ;P
Sweet sketchbook ~!
For a lil critique, some of your figures in the barfight/zombie attack pic seem a lil stiff, but you don't make a trend of that in all your pics so that's pretty good
But besides that, I really like the mood and atmosphere of a lot of your pics, especially the sketch with the (what I assume is a) wizard and robot/golem thing

Sonia Leticia: Hi Sonia! Yeah, the zombiepicture was quite a painful journey, just couldn't get that flow for some parts... Need to work on movement much more, it's difficult. And hey, good to hear you like my work!
Wips of a painting I'm working on at the moment, comments and critiques are welcome!

dude, awesome work as always! the last painting, her face bugs me a bit though, it feels like its a bit out of perspective, maybe rework her expression too? keepup :3

Parsakoira: Hey mate, thanks! You're right, I had been staring the picture for so long and I didn't notice the problem with her face... Gotta keep going and fixing stuff!
So, here's progress so far. I tried to correct the woman's face and the male's shoulders, neck and head and I think it looks at least more correct now. I also did some work on the man's hand and overall colour adjustment.
Well, so that this painting doesn't completely take over my sketchbook, here's also a moodier piece done in 1 hour with a topic "Neverending Rage: The Warrior".

Here are some concepts on mining mechs, too much resemblance with StarCraft's SCV in the first one I think. Also some random scene about a thief who has stolen something valuable or maybe he is trespassing, need to work on that one!

Last piece is awesome, your characters are your weak point so far in my opinion, working on anatomy and from real life could help this out, concentrate on details of anatomy, how each limb is connected to the other, how muscles interact when on effort, it's a very tough job but it can only make your art better.
Keep up the nice work.

Feil Magnus: Thanks for the comment man, I appreciate that. I actually started a model drawing course in school, it feels really helpful though a little hard in the beginning.
It's been some time since I last posted here, I have been really busy with all the stuff that has been going on. School started at Tampere University of Applied Sciences and I gotta say, it seems like the right place for me. I study Media there and it's really interesting.
Here are bunch of stuff that I have made in the meantime, some more finished stuff, speedies, concept art, studies, sketches and model drawings. We have a model drawing course in our school and I feel it's a really good thing to practice from live models, so much different than rendering from photos or other still material... I need to start pushing myself and be more active in drawing and painting.

TFsean: Thanks man, nice to hear that! I've been trying to have a good focal point, but sometimes when you just start putting the paint on canvas (without an idea) you don't really think about it that much... Need to change that.^^'
Here are some sketches from the modeldrawing classes and a few Blizzard -inspired pencil drawings.

AdrianNagorski: Haha, thank you so much.
Hello everyone. I had quite a nice weekend in Turku with awesome fellow artists and we actually managed to do two collabs also.
We also managed to get quite wasted during the painting process, really fun stuff. So the two first pics are painted by Parsakoira, myself, Rotor and Keppo.
Then I have some drawings from the model drawing class, random sketching/studying and some stuff for weekly themes at an art collective blog Fishfruit. The spider mecha is concept art for a schoolproject, still need to animate the robot.
Hope you guys like these, and comments and critiques are very welcome!

Aww hell, that grayscale enviro has a great feel to it, both of them actually.
The spider mecha reminds me of Chrono Trigger, ever played it?
Also the latest one is a badass concept, only thing I would've suggested is to give some more crisper edges to her body to have an even more solid form.
We need to arrange another drunken sketchmeet ASAP.
Keep kicking ass my friend.

Love your Scifi themes! You did good work on the environmental/perspective grayscales, and I like the tones you add to some of them. Very rich in color and points of interest.

Dude. Ive posted here before but I dont remember you improving so much. Brutal improvement for a year. That newest piece is so legit and that indian zombie stuff. Love the volume of figure drawings too.
Sick sick man, such a way with colour too. Well done
January 18th, 2012 #30
Rotor: Thanks for the kind words mate! Yes, I truly have played Chrono Trigger which is a f-ing awesome game and I actually used some of it's art as an inspiration for that spider robot. Glad it shows!
And yes, we totally need to arrange a sketch meeting again because it was AAAWESOME. I'll try to!
Kiwizoom: Thank you so much, I really appreciate that! Nice to hear about the colors because that's something I don't really feel that comfortable usually.
TFsean: Oh, now you're making me feel too good about myself, stop it. No, but really, thank you so very much, I totally appreciate that.
Okay guys, the year 2012 has started and I've been thinking of starting the year trying to kick my own ass to start improving. So, my idea is to do at least one photo/movie study everyday, of course the amount of painting and drawing is depending on the workload that school gives. But at least one a day. I've been slacking too much lately.
Well, here's something new. So, a couple of movie studies, sketching, testing out smoother style (trying to understand the form also, the colors are still a bit off but anyway) and a previous picture I think I'll try to render better, still in progress. Comments and critiques are appreciated!
I'll try to render the demoness which is the last picture better to actually get a good piece out of it. What do you guys think of it and the changes? I think I still kinda like the previous one, it looks more dead and creepy imo...
