The Drawing Shack | While my pencil gently weeps

    Hello everyone,

I've been lurking around here quite some time, so I decided to get off my lazy butt and sign up. I hope to improve after awhile of posting my drawings here (probably a long while).

Most of what you'll see are referenced images, studies from Ernest R. Norling's "Perspective Made Easy", some Bridgeman (Constructive Anatomy, etc.), and a slew of Loomis books. Probably some drawings from life too. I hope to update this thread daily. [EDIT: I have been updating this thread daily for every page so far, trying to keep it up!] [Double EDIT: Stopped daily updating at day 70, it's a pain to scan stuff every day and post it here]

It's about to get real messy from here, pull on your gloves and try not to get lost in my crappy drawings. Also sorry for all the whitespace, I'm working on using up more of the paper.

Hello, Lunatic Hermit, welcome to CA.

And wow, those are some great perspective studies. You may consider me officially jealous. Envious even.

    Keep 'em coming.

    Day 2

Thanks a bunch Jouzinka for the comment and welcome!
More perspective studies on the way.

I hope to start drawing anatomy soon, but I've only got a few chapters left in this book so I guess I'll stay focused on one subject for now. I only got two 'studies' done, they barely fill up the page and they aren't drawn quite well. I'll have to spend more time drawing this weekend...

(My scans always look screwed up because my sketchbook doesn't fit in the scanner properly and I don't feel like ripping out pages. Sorry about that.)

I like how you make notes for yourself.

BUT I think it could serve your motivation better to point out what things you did well too.

    Day 3

    Ha ha
I suppose some positive reinforcement every once in awhile would be nice. But I haven't really drawn anything good. Yet.

Only got /one/ drawing done today, yuck. I promise I'll have more to post tomorrow!

By the way, if the images are too big let me know and I'll scale it down.

Well, assuming that one is one's *worst* critic... I know I am.

    Day 4

Jouzinka: Definitely, that critic can be a pain sometimes. I forgive it though, he's just trying to make me better

On another note, phew! Almost didn't make the daily cut. I kind of broke my promise though, sorta. I do have more stuff to show you, but still only one page; not only that but it is a crappy webcam quality picture. Let's just say my dad is on WoW and is uploading pictures with my good camera.

So in the mean time, sorry about the quality (of both the 'art' and the picture, heh). I started some head studies because that whole notion of 'focus on only one thing' would have probably put me behind in skill...

    Loomis, yay!

    Good one.

On a totally unrelated side note, though, it gives me perverse pleasure to see that someone is on similar terms with drawing circles and spheres like I am. The Drawing Shack | While my pencil gently weeps

    Day 5

Jouzinka: I will try to rob that pleasure from you by practicing circles and spheres. I know the way I draw circles and stuff really isn't good at all, heh.

Only have two 'drawings' today, both are practicing circles/lines. If possible I'll try to draw more Loomis, perspective, and lines tomorrow.

I am disappointed in you, Mr. Lunatic Hermit. :|

    Day 6

It may just be me, but these seem to look way better on paper. :/
Except the heads. They need improvement either way...

Wow, I'm really cutting it close. Still posting daily, barely.
Plus this is an old study; I hope to have more tomorrow (new studies that is, heh) !

you've got a nice amount of work, that's a really good sign!

about your perspective studies: use a ruler! the ONLY person in the world who's allowed to do this without a ruler is Feng Zhu, look up his (mostly free) online tutes and you'll know why! The rest of us, even the professionals, have to use rulers!

heads: too early for you I'd say, you're probably getting super frustrated! my suggestion would be to start doing some body anatomy instead, it's much more interesting and forgiving, and less fiddly. bridgman and loomis have written great books about anatomy, give it a go! and if you can, find a life drawing class (tutored is best) - it's the best way to learn anatomy as 3d shapes, which becomes incredibly important later on

hope this helps, if you keep up this amount of work you'll be awesome in a year or two

    Day 9

NeonDuck: Thanks for the kind words of encouragement and advice!
Yeah, I will definitely use a ruler next time. I thought my line would develop more if I did not use a ruler, but there isn't much point in that now because I am doing separate line practices. I think I'll keep practicing heads, but I won't make that my main subject of study. I did some gestures because they are more fun to do (as you said) and they are very quick.
Thanks a bunch for helping me out

Concerning the drawings below, I did all three of those in like twenty minutes because I had not done any other drawing today.
I must step it up a notch, but I am pretty busy.
