    Wyeth Study

Done in CS5. Trying to understand how N.C. Wyeth massed in his dark values in his illustration which is mostly in the center of this piece. I notice directional lines pointing the character from the rock textures, and rocks from the water, and the water itself. The lightest part of the image which is the focal point happens to be his collar. Mostly a low key(dark) value.

Hey Dblock, thanks for the words in my sketchbook. Appreciated really. Browsed through your sketchbook and DA gallery. Good stuff, its great that your doing alot of studies...I never had the patience to do much of those, ive always rushed right into designing...which leaves me with some bad habits now . What I would suggest for your characters, is to start from a dark silhouette. Either formed by big brush strokes, or smaller ones (which sometimes gives more creepy silhouettes). From there, try to add interesting and unique shape to the human or animal figure to spice it up. Then go pick up some reference of what your seeing in that silhouette (lets say a cat) and start rendering the forms based on your references. Thats what I do, I find it a fun and fast way to work. Theres many other ways to approach this, but you can try the way I do it (as well as many other artist) if you feel like it Good luck in your studies!!!

Matt Leveret - Thanx very much. I always had a tough time working with my imaginative work. I will take this into account in my sketchbook. As far as studies, I really did not understood this concept of studying until a couple years ago so I understand where you are coming from. These really do help with your work and should contact Dave Rapoza on how and what to study. Trust me, your work will improve much, much faster.
