Advice on doing commissions for strangers

    Hey guys,

I have a question I want some advice on.

I was at the bar and a Guy I hear was looking at me drawing for a while. He came to see me later on and asked if I can do a nude of him and he is ready to pay me, I can work at his place or at another place he can travel.

Question is I feel afraid and unsafe, guy is taller stronger then me and I have a feeling either he likes me or maybe he really loves my work thats it.

Is it a risk to go work at this persons place? if not what are good alternatives ? One of my friends already refused, I am trying to see if some other friends wants it, I can even pay them. What do you guys think is it unsafe to go to a persons place ? can I actually test if it is safe when going to meet him at a coffee ? like good questions to ask ?

I will be charging between 100-200$ the piece is a bit bigger they mayfair paper size. buying paint for this can cost 30-40$ and the canvas probly 10$. ANd I am thinking 8hours to draw with the model 8hours without the model. Its a painting in acryliks

I'd ask a friend of mine to accompany me at all times (preferably a big burly friend). Also, I would definitely charge way more. If he's willing to pay a lot then you know he's actually serious about it and not just a predator, and also that amount of work is worth at least $500 IMO.

Some guy saw you drawing AT A BAR, so he wants you to COME TO HIS PLACE and DRAW HIM IN THE NUDE?! And you already feel afraid and unsafe? Do you really need to ask about this?

    I agree with Elwell.

If you and he insist, why not doing it in some neutral ground? And yeah, definitely take safety precautions. Establish safety net, bring a friend with you (if situation permits).

Or maybe check out my friends, they deserve it more.

Yeah, try to steer clear of him. Even if he didn't have dirty intentions, anyone who wants a drawing of themselves naked isn't the kind of person you'd want to be alone in a house with.

I would charg a minimum 0f 150$-200$ because I believe thats what I am worth, its my first painting job, for the next one I would add more.

Maybe the person is fine. I have asked people for portraits or nudes before, Friends!! or some strangers. but Never somebody came to me.

I could actually never call, but I could also go and have a coffee with the person and decide from here.

SO I can have somebody accompany me to draw with me or to actualy take nots of my stuff(excuse)

I can also specify I am not used to draw at peoples place so I bring an other artist with me.

But really how much money its worth to you guys minimum?

I know my skills is not super high but if the clients likes what he sees i will do it.

10$ an hour + 1,5x or 2x the price of the materials , thats how I grade it

So its like 60-70$ of material and 10 hours live is like 100$ and the extra 8hours I put I can charge a bit less.

Knowing I am a pretty busy person, work once a week at a time shop and do school assignments.

I want the job cuz I dont have an off money so I need to always get money with small jobs.

I got one for 50$ at school but that is safe labor.

So most of y ou guys think its crippy heh?

I did not put any details on the person but its a guy but in a girl form. I did not say anything at first so it would bias you guys answer

that depends on a number of factors...

People doing art as a hobby can charge whatever they feel like, based on their skill.
Usually the hobby artists earn less than most waiter in china, 1 - 2 figures, the typical DA rates.

As a professional freelance you calculate your rates different:

you calculate the rough number of hours you usually get to work per month, then you calculate all your living costs such as house, food, family, kids and so on and so on and based on that you charge.
The better you get, the faster you work and the more you charge.

Personally i never work with hour rates, i prefer a flat rates, rates per asset, monthly flat rate and so on...

I might cancel because I feel so unsafe. I am t hinking of it. WHen I am the one choosing the model, even thought I don't make money for it(practice) its more safe.

How much can it cost for a print, a print for an original ? Lets say an original is 150$ a print can be 1/4 the price right ?

I am trying to figure out strategies to pay the models of who I want to work with, so I can work with them again. probably money is my best bet for this. I do short hours like 3-4hours

I myself have a bad feeling about that. And you seem to have a bad feeling, so you need to just follow what your heart's saying, really. Money might be something good, but if anything happens it won't be worth it.

I guess you might see his intentions if you tell him that you will have some "assistants" accompanying you and he gets funny.

The guy might be genuinely interested in art and just posing nude. I agree it's a good idea to bring a friend or let others know what address you are heading too...just in case you disappear...

If the roles were reserved, I think it would be awkward for any artist to request to draw/photograph someone nude. It can be seem creepy on both sides. Unless they are asking someone very close or a model.

Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

Augh! Don't do it! Please listen to what your gut & everyone else is telling you... it's not worth it.

(And for god's sake, next time you agree to do a commission, charge more. Undervaluing your work is bad for not only you, but other freelance artists who have to earn a living wage. But no matter what this guy pays you, don't go!)

If you put out the same "please take advantage of me" vibe in real life as you do here, you seriously seriously seriously seriously need to not have anything to do with this person.

Man Kate Winslet's boob's are awesome...Watch the perfect curvature from top to bottom and just the right amount of nipple centered perfectly to present you with an astounding and sensual silhouette.

Too few women rely on their instinct when it comes to these sorts of things-- if you're getting vibes, why take the chance? $200 or $500-- no amount of money is worth some douchebag getting grabby with me.

    Oh, please.
Usually, I find your posts quite interesting and informative, but in this case I think you are being pretty uptight and ridiculous.

Learn your internet memes before you bust on someone for being "racist".
