life drawing adventures(scroll down for update 04.29.05)

i'd love some feedback. i haven't been too confident lately. sometimes i think i'm alright. sometimes, i want to toss my pencil and give up.

some of the drawings are looking really good, and others are a bit more confused. that's pretty much the same for everyone... why should you be any different? when we get a little better, we raise the bar, and suddenly we feel not so good anymore. that's just how it goes. progress is tough, but you've already come far. stick with it!!!

3 rules of art (from zena grey?)

    1) be yourself
    2) do your best
    3) never give up

I think these drawings are looking good!

I had a teacher tell our class that it is a GOOD thing to feel frustrated while you're drawing because that means your brain is LEARNING .By the same token if you dont feel frustrated its BAD because you're NOT learning-your comfortable where you're at.

It looks to me like you know what you're doing with your drawing, maybe you just need to be more patient.Just keep puttin in your "mileage"and you'll be allright.

Thesehave LAFIGAARTS or ASSOCIATES or ART INSTITUTE written all over them...hehe THey are nice in their rhythm. They lack cohession within the shadow patterns. First, the core shadows are piecey. They need continuity, much like a contour line, only the subtle variations are a result of that core shadow varying from head of muscle to tendon or insertion point.

Second, the shadows have little solid contrast from the lights, making them read obscurely. Use that side of teh pencil and lay in those tones and make them match the values of your contours and coreshadows, then you will have adhession and no more outlines...

    I hope that helps.

I like the linework, I think you did a good job of capturing the pose.
As some have suggested, maybe focus less on outline and more on mass and creating form with shadow.

thanks for all the comments and suggestions. i'll work on it. here's a little update to keep this thread alive. hopefully i can keep updating with improvement.

the only figure class i've had was at a community college and since then i'm just a self taught bastard child of other artists.

it's been three months since that first post. i've been inconsistently working on my figures, but didn't find anything worthy of posting. every time i take a little break from it and pick it up again, i feel like i forgot how to draw and i have to re-learn. i guess my drawing arm is just like any other muscle. you can lose muscle mass, but u can also retrain ur muscles.

not improving as much as i'd like...here are some 2mins-5mins

i'll try some long poses and practice my patience some time. i just find it kinda hard to go further when the foundation isn't right. an ugly car will be ugly no matter how shiny it is. in other words, i'm working more on structure than lighting/shadow.
