The only way I can describe your sketchbook is awe inspiring! You manage to capture just the right elements in each of your pieces, as though you are taking a photo of an actual event, and your character design has so much detail and personality. Defiantly subscribing!

your handle on form is brilliant, i love the textures you get and how your pieces feel solid and loose at the same time. I wish you posted your painting for the four horsemen in the final burning for CHOW, I def. would have voted for it.

I am very impressed with your work.

I'm amazed at how you manage to capture the perfect moment in your paintings. What kind of brush did you use for the girl's clothes on that last piece? Looks so vivid *__*

And thanks for showing the reference you were using! Gives a very good impression on how you are actually working.

Now excuse me while I wipe off that puddle under my mouth...

Hey Bnoch, really really awesome work. You're always putting down really awesome stuff in the CHOWs and I'm glad you made a sketchbook.

I have a few questions if you happen to have the time.
What's your background in art? How long have you been doing it seriously?
Are you a student or professional? How old are you?
How long does a character illustration usually take you?
Do you have any other sites with your work on them?
and lastly, when you get to the step in your images to add color, what's the layer mode you use to lay it down?

Thanks a lot man. Great work.

hey there just dropped by to explain a few things so that you dont get me wrong, all I say is more or less ironical if its something like in the actual CHoW 230 thread. So please dont get it wrong for my part its pure ( positive and inspiring ) enviousness, I really think you got a gift here, as you seem to nail it every time ! Its mind-blowing to see your work, please post more, maybe some of the older stuff of yours or whatsoever.

Either way keep rocking dude !

    so long

Amazing stuff! I like how you've shown some of your work in stages of progression. It's helpful and inspiring to someone like me. Not sure if this is how they're all done seeing that I just signed up and this is one of the first sketchbooks I've checked out.

Yo, its like a lovefest up in here!

    @Untouched24
    What's your background in art?
I studied illustration and animation At San Jose State. I graduated with a BFA in 2005 and have worked in Video games since.

How long have you been doing it seriously?
I've been interested in art for as long as I can remember, and doing it seriously since I realized I can make money doin' it Truthfully, I saw "A New Hope" at a young age and had my mind sufficiently blown. But it was films like "Dark Crystal", "Clash of the Titans", and "Bladerunner" that really F**cked me up. (in that great kinda' way)

    How old are you?
    30

How long does a character illustration usually take you?
Depends on a bunch of factors. Sometimes 3-4 hours sometimes 2-3 days. It's usually a matter of deadlines or my level on interest. I do a quick search for good ref, layout some quick thumbnails and poses, and go from there. Same goes for environments, props, etc.

Do you have any other sites with your work on them?
http://brenoch.blogspot.com/ This is where I post most of my recent work. I've got a bunch of images I can't post at the moment because of contract stuff, but for the most part it will end up here.

and lastly, when you get to the step in your images to add color, what's the layer mode you use to lay it down?
I paint directly on top of the B/W as I would traditionally with some layers of softlight, multiplicity, and others to build up a foundation. I have found that you can only get so far with layers like softlights, overlays, or multiplicity. They work well as washes to get a decent base, but eventually they don't provide the rich color you will get with normal modes. It's really a matter or relying heavily on traditional skills that are developed with mileage.

I paint everyday, and come home from studio work and keep doing it. There is always someone better out there who is working harder than you are. Just like anything else, if you do it all the time, you will see results. I'm sure you've already had some of those "ah ha!" moments where something begins to make sense. That's what makes all this shit worth it, the times when you feel like you've discovered something that reflects your own voice as an artist.

So, no more reading this crap, and start f**ckin' rockin' it!
