awesome sketchbook, love going through it.
i like your work, nice and solid. only thing i'd like to point out to you is the sense of space, i think it could use some work.
if details and composition, and colour and etc are there, the mood isn't and the many details confuse me at times, and
i end up wondering where i should look first.

Among obvious technical skill you've got a real nice sense of where to detail and where to simplify - very nice.

Thanks for all the replies and responses.

"What's your favorite thing about art?" I'd answered it differently when I was younger because I thought I knew what I was talking about (I was wrong).

This is not the type of craft that one can read about, hear from a respected lecturer, or see in a how-to video and become an expert without doing it in diligent fashion. One might say, "this shit is really difficult". Even when you think you may have broken through, you're wrong. Someone out there is better.

I think I like that its always the same, and always different. I like that it's a lifetime commitment. I like that even the most untrained hack can think they are an artistic genius. I like that I'll always look back at my work from last week and think it sucks. Through all the challenges and difficulty, I like that it's still just another expression of the imagination.

    F**kin' A.

@phatbuddha - At a high level, my advice is to keep looking for inspiration. Stick with the mechanics you're exploring; although tedious now, they pay off in the future. Don't guess when you're designing images, always follow what nature tells you to draw with solid structure and form. Keep learning anatomy and perspective, if you don't it will catch up with you and haunt your dreams with shitty architecture and f**cked up facial structure Most of all, realize that you WILL get better and find your own voice as an artist if you keep working at it.

The top scene there with the mountains hits me where I live man. I was doing some painting trying to look at mountains and get the forms right and figure out rendering. There are a few things I notice that make me love this painting.

    1. Use of color. Colors are vibrant right on the main focal point, I never noticed that about your stuff before but looking back I can see you used vivid colors where you want the viewer's eye to be drawn. I have no formal art training so if that is something basic I just learned it.

    2. Sharpness. The rendering technique you use is to me the thing that makes me frustrated with my own work. I can never seem to get the forms to do what I want, and get the shapes to be sharp like you have. Even when I use solid colors I can't seem to get that effect. Time and practice I guess. Your use of texture and flat color keeps me working to be able to get that definition.

    3. Drama. The little details in this painting make me look at my own work and aspire to be better, think differently, etc. The story here, two guys travelling, snowy mountains, ravens, a smoldering campfire, just little stuff all over the painting.

Again I love your work man, it makes me stretch my thinking everytime I see something you post.

    Thanks again.
