aryeh: Thanks man! I will post some more longer pieces as they come, something I'm really trying to improve.
    theUNKNOWNsketcher: Thanks!
kitfox: thanks man! I love to explore! Great work in your sketchbook, I'm glad your truckin' along with your 10,000 hr goal!
Lav: Thanks Lieve, I'm excited to see some animation from you! I appreciate you pointing out your favorites and I agree, you have a good eye!
psage: Thanks Chad, All great crits! That was an ambitious piece... Everytime with a piece like that, I come to a point around halfway in where I start doubting myself, and saying "I'll never finish this!" or "give up and start again with something simple!" I never regret plowing through to the finish though..... I would say a third of my time gets wasted redrawing things. Maybe I would have had time to address those issues if I was working smarter. I am learning a lot lately about organizing my file for complicated scenes though, so I'm hoping it will run a bit smoother next time.

I wanted to throw this out there as an option for doing master studies.. I know there's a bit of a plaque lately of people posting their anatomy studies/ master studies, screen cap studies, ect. WITHOUT posting any substantive imaginative work... Not that studies are bad to do, I do a TON of them... but I just don't post them... If you notice, aside from my figure drawings, I almost never post my studies here... This relates to something I'd like to post about extensively someday, I call it "encoding" for lack of a better term....
See, it's not enough to just do a crap ton of studies... Intuitively I think we all know that, but I think its important to know why and how we can apply the information in our studies to our own work. ...
Our brain/body is a system and systems have behaviors which involve INPUTS, PROCESSING and OUTPUTS. What happens along the way is what I call "encoding". For the purposes of this model, I consider studying as the input side of the equation. (Really you are doing all three constantly, but I'm trying to fit this into a model that helps us to make more stuff from our imagination, something I think we'd all like to do.) Processing is what happens when we observe and ask questions about what we see. Output, within the scope of this model, is working from our own internally processed information to create something from our imagination. The catch is, "encoding" is required for the system to function efficiently, and to "encode" you have to have all three... if you remove one of the three, the data passing through the system doesn't "stick" and become part of the system. When all three are present, the data "crystallizes" and becomes part of your internal toolbox.
Now, there is a lot of flexibility in this model, but I know there's something to it based on my own experience... Like a lot of people here, I used to copy loomis books, cover to cover... then I would sit down, a week later, to draw something from imagination.. aaannndd poop.. nothing... everything I had diligently copied had left my brain.. (sound familiar?) That's because I wasn't processing and I had no output for the information I was taking in.....
There are a ton of ways to "encode" your studying.. I would love to hear yours.. but this piece is an example of one I've been doing lately.. After I've done a master study, in this case a Craig Mullins .. The next night (without looking) I will recreate that study from my imagination (his is waaaay better )... This forces you to process what you are learning, so that you can remember it the next day... Also, it's a great way to get inside an artists head, and see how they solve problems... (or process things ). Interestingly enough, your piece will take on a life of its own. You may find, as i have, that this makes master studies WAY more practical. Just remember, no matter how you do it, you have to encode the information somehow... Ultimately that means YOU HAVE TO CREATE A PIECE (OUTPUT) EXCLUSIVELY FROM YOUR OWN INTERNALLY PROCESSED INPUTS.
Hope that is useful, let me know your experiences with it... Remember, this is only a mental model and therefore a generalization, so it will be proven wrong at some point. Just consider it a tool for the tool box that you can use to supercharge your studies...

Painter crashed on me during the session so I lost about 30 min worth. I'm a bit rusty, forgot how unstable painter can be. Will probably do a lot more digital figure painting from here on.

I'm going to stop timing things for a while... I need to not think about that when I work, make some art outside of time..

Colin. Your thread is awesome. Your works varied so much, and techniqe as well.
It's really pleasure to look at.
Last image is great, but imho something is wrong with model's left feet. Like perspective shift. Rest is great.
    Waiting for next works

You use lines and color very sparingly but so effectively, love it! Keep up the experimenting.

Thanks so much for your comments everyone! It appears this thread has fallen into the nether-realm of 4 stardom... and I get it, my stuff sucks... and it probably doesn't help that the first page is full of crappy gestures. Considering the quality of art around here, I don't blame anyone for seeing the first page and dropping one star on my thread, (although I still don't understand that kind of behavior, lol) That being said, I need more eyes on my stuff, so I'm going to start a new thread where I will post more selectively and with more finished pieces,.. I considered quitting this thread, but it's been healthy for me, so I'll keep it going on a daily basis, but from now on it will just be doodles.. maybe some figure drawing thrown in for good measure. For those who have been regulars in here, I love ya', god bless ya', but unless you have a specific question or something, I will probably not be responding to people here anymore, (except for a thanks of course, because i do read every comment ) At this point in my life, I'm pretty desperate to improve, so I'm starting my most rigorous work regime ever, and I don't have any time for dropping into threads and typing hundreds of replies... (although sometimes I can't help myself Thanks everybody so much, I LOVE YOU ALL!

haha, i like the special boy drawing Your figure drawings are really great. I wouldn't worry too much about those stars, I personally don't understand voting behaviour at all but I think your first page is still important, I've been impressed by your line quality from the beginning (and the fact that you use charcoal, something that I can never work with x.x) but it's so interesting to see how you've grown, not only for yourself but for visitors as well.

dun get down about the star system. there are a lot of people who have weird scores that they dont deserve (both good and bad). I think we have to remember that sometimes there are spam accounts that (unfortunately) come through every once in a while and dish out 1-stars and knock some people down.

Anyways, atleast you didnt get knocked down to 3 stars... i did for like 4 months and i almost quit the forums because of it...

Very inspirational work you have here my man. I see that in post #541 you refer to Sparth's shape tool technique. That looks very interesting and I was wondering if you could please direct me to more information on that subject?
    Thanks!
