Are there art highschools in US?

    Hi all,

A friend of mine is looking for a high school with visual art focus in the US. I'm wondering if there are any known schools, private or public, that teaches good foundational art classes and possibly emphasize on art? To my understanding, most high schools here in the US tend to leave the door open, so to speak, rather than choosing a focus. I would love to get some more educated opinions before giving them false information. Also, if any of you have decided in high school that you wanted to be a professional artist on the representational side, what experiences and advises can you share?

Thank you very much & happy new year!

    -NB

Almost every big city has at least one art magnet school.

Shows how much I know Is there a good site to search for them? I found many schools boasting of their art (and other) programs but had difficulty finding ones that are mostly visual art rather than generalists. Thanks much!

I'm not aware of any site with a comprehensive list of art magnet schools (not that I've ever looked). Try looking at the website of the school system of any city that you're considering moving to.

I know of this one school that is pretty... "artsy." Santa Susana High School in Southern California.

But I don't know much about this school, so... :/

Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) in southern California.
Canyon Crest Academy is also very focused on the arts.

NCSA - it's free if you live in NC, but everywhere else you have to pay.

Many areas have a vocation/tech school that students from various area high schools may opt into. I did this for graphics design and computer art, but at that time computer art consisted of using a mouse to paint one pixel at a time with about 25 colors to choose from. The graphics design I learned is mostly obsolete as well, since nobody uses color separation printing methods anymore and that was the focus of our instruction.
