Obviously, the "amount he could handle" paying was $0.

If it's only a week he might be on holiday, so give it some more time. If it turns out he doesn't respond then you need to ask yourself, what did you expect? People do not value things they don't pay for (or aren't asked to pay for), and that's simple fact. It's likely you've given away your work and there's nothing you can do about it. In fact, he's not even defaulting on a deal because you gave him the option of paying nothing or next to nothing. I can't fathom why you'd have such a low estimation of your own work but that seems to be the deal.

Next time, work for a reasonable fee, utilise a contract and make sure you get money before you send the final image.

'fraud' implies the wrong thing. Nonetheless didnt that dude say that he changed his mind and was going to do the portrait himself as he thought it would take so little time? (if i remember rightly) DIG OUT THE THREAD I SAY. Ill go get my burning torch.

I always but a large watermark on stuff, even finished work, and don't remove it until I get money. I always never starts final rendering until I have a contract.

Ah, yes...the old "Hey, man...I'm in a hurry, can I get that image? I promise I send out the payment next week!" routine.

....and now you have learned a valuable lesson. Not just with art, but with life as well. When someone has everything they need from you, they have no incentive to hold their part of the bargain. Always hold out on whatever the person wants until you get what you are owed. Always.

No matter how hard they cry, no matter how immediate they say they have to have it. "I have to present this at a meeting tomorrow morning! If I don't have it, I'll be chewed out!". Tough shit. How is that your fault? Always stick to your guns...never give anything away for free.

I have an ex-roomate who still has some of his crap at my house. And I have reminded him 5 times that if he doesn't bring back the video games he borrowed from me once upon a time, that he is not getting anything of his back. Imagine that, he's coming to pick it up this weekend with the games in hand. Don't think he didn't try to say "I'll get those games to ya when I can, but I REALLY need to get my stuff now" a couple of weeks ago. But I knew if I let him get his stuff, I'd never see those games again. So the onus is on HIM...not me.

    That's life. Protect yourself.

By the time you get payment (if you even do) it probably wasn't worth the stress and fuss. I understand you probably lowballed yourself out of charity and sympathy...strangers can say anything.
