Alex Zelenski's Path to Success (updated 1-17-11)

As a new years resolution I decided to force myself to sketch SOMETHING daily. If you want to help me out all you have to do is comment on something here and tell me how I can improve. I have Loomis books that I need to look through and I will when I have the time but with school and constantly being bugged by parents and my neice and nephew when they come over during the weekends I cant really sit down and read and draw out of the loomis books right now. (In about a month or 2 I should be in Florida AND far away from my annoying as hell relatives and things should calm down a HUGE bit at my house so I could sit and actually study them for a good while. Well here goes nothing on trying to get a daily sketch done for the entire year of 2011. (Daily sketches start on the 5th post in this thread)

Old work above (official start of me kinda knowing what to do with digital painting)

Alex Zelenski's Path to Success (updated 1-17-11)
Sorry about the missed day. I have my neice and nephew over and they kinda piss me off and its just not a good environment for me to do work in. Little work in progress I am painting for my sister. Any comments?

Hey Alex, glad to hear you are trying to improve your artwork even if life can get in the way sometimes. I know how it might feel to have others around distracting you.

You've got great concept here in your artwork and I think you could do a lot better through this "daily sketchbook".

First I would suggest you start using traditional media. Painting with acrylics will help you see colour when you try and mix them together. It's a pain in the ass, but mixing colours helps you a lot. Try to find books if you can on colour theory (no need for expensive ones).

If you are on a tight budget, then just keep working on your digital paintings. Look up tutorials and watch how other people paint.

I recommend you keep working on your pencil drawings. They will train your hand-to-eye co-ordination. Make big gestures with your pencil rather than sketchy lines. My figure drawing teacher taught me this and so far her theory has worked. Draw basic geometric shapes until you feel confident that the circle you drew isn't an oval and that square looks sharp and strong enough to carry something.

I hope this can be a bit helpful to you.

    - Vince

Keep drawing everyday! Also, i'd suggest slowing down some. It looks like a lot of your sketches and paintings were done quickly and I think you'd benefit for spending more time with one piece. Start with larger brushes to block shapes, and move to progressively smaller ones for details. With computer on our side there's definitely no reason be filling in a background with a small brush.
