    A bush! A bush! I painted a bush!

It was hard. i had to play with sooooo many brushes before i got something remotely happy. So ya.

Just that. I played DnD with friends today! I love DnD. Fun game. This painting took about an 1 hour and 1/2. or 2 hours.

That bush looks really good. Maybe try breaking up the symmetry a bit.

Since you asked for ref in my sketchbook I thought I'd leave some stuff here. Ryanoir already asked me the exact same thing today, so this is just copied and pasted from what I told him:

And since you asked about sites for ref in my book...well it depends for what. Every time I see a good site I bookmark it under a folder called Art Resources. I used to also have an Awesome Artists one, and each had hundreds of links, but in June I got a virus and lost both the artists and refs. I am slowly rebuilding it, but now it is kind of shitty (I don't even bother naming them properly anymore, and don't bother with artists).

A few useful ones (you may already know a bunch of them though):
    http://www.artrenewal.org/ For master copies
http://mmaphotography.com/m/main.php for muscle men in action poses
    http://www.angelfire.com/art3/kchendemos/ Kevin Chen (anatomies)
    http://www.bestarmour.com/ Armour
http://www.characterdesigns.com/ their photosets have high res figures with studio lighting
http://pbase.com/ use this for photoref instead of google
http://www.scott-eaton.com/category/bodies-in-motion CRAZY GOOD FIGURE REF IN GOOD POSES
http://www.kindgirls.com/ (NOTE THAT SOME HERE IS SOFTCORE) Sexy girl ref with good lighting
    http://www.thesartorialist.blogspot.com/ fashion ref

    NOOO!!! but I need you!
Oh well I guess college is important so I'll overlook it X)

I gotta start up soon too so i may go missing 4 awhile myself.

BTW great job on the armor, it's a bitch and a half to draw that stuff and almost just as hard to find the right ref for it.

Nice armour study! I find what worked for me when I painted them is to use a really soft brush to get super smooth transitions, and then use a really hard one to make all the edges super sharp and define the overlapping plates.

Another thing to keep in mind with armour is that it is basically a dull mirror, so will pick up a lot of it's surrounding environment. I'm guessing there is more green in the armour than you have painted.

If you look at this one I painted, you can see both how I used soft brushes with hard on top, and how there is the green of the grass below reflected in it and the red of the sleeves (there should also be more blueish colour on the top planes of the armour reflecting the sky, but my study wasn't perfect):

The amount of progress you've made over the years is extraordinary Sam, your an inspiration mate. Don't stop now tho... but I've got a feeling you don't intend to!

That is a really awesome bush, it has to feel spontaneous, not necessarily slap dashed on, but random enough to not feel too designed I guess..

Great job on the armour too.. it could maybe use one more value for shadows imho, but hey I don't know anything about painting armour, just a thought.. =)

I really like your art but personally I'd like to see more traditional pencil sketches like in your high school sketch book. Other than that keep up the good work

I should put some pencil sketches up. Its just a pain really. I'll start putting up my figure drawings from life class or something. I'm also gonna start a journal so i guess I could post that up. Planning on creating a alien world with it (100 pages of geography and life forms )

I see what ya mean with a different colour for the shade of the armour, but I think I was just copying the photo and that's what it was like generally. I actually made the armour greener so i could have made a mistake with it.

So i did this little experiment today, I really don't feel like doing anything on my weekends with college going but I did really wanna try and get painting a tree right. It's hard >.> - Which brings me back to my bush, it does seem more like a design rather than vegetation which isn't something I really want. Hopefully I can get it right one day - the tree looks pretty good, but again this was just a doodle (sorta) so its a bit strange looking. But it feels like a tree for the most part. - Hopefully I can make a bush better next time

Hey, it's looking good bro. It looks like one of those bushes or trees they keep neatly trimmed outside of offices. I think the edges are good and the shadow nice too. =)

I'm back and will be updating on a regular basis now for about 4 months until school starts up.

Probably will update twice a week or 3 times. Depending. I got a job. So who knows how much energy I will have...

Anyways, so this was supposed to be a speed painting but it ended up going for about 2 hours and turned into a skin tone study XD - Ahhhh skin...I hate thee...

I also realized that doing a paint at 1000x1000px is not large enough. Doing eyes at that size is really really hard and my oil brush doesn't seem to want to allow it. - Or maybe I need more practice. Wellll either way...

well I'm tired. I spent probably 2 hours fiddling around with ideas and finally came up with something while doodling a face.

    I did everything from imagination.

I think the jaw may need a slight fix though. Not to sure. Hand hurts at the moment. Don't feel like working on it anymore.

    yayz

Sooo this is based on a member of a band that I like. The setting is completely fictional but the person is used with reference I suppose. This took a bit of playing around to get right but I thiiiiink I like it sooo far... Still just tinkering with it and stuff... Lol i swear this took 2 hours to get right XD - So much playing around. My original thumb was so boring looking -_-"

I like the more regular updates, but want to see more stuff from observation. Working from your imagination is good and all, but without the observational studies the imaginative ones will be weaker.

For instance, the lighting on the latest image is inconsistent. There isn't really a well defined light source, the light source does not have much of a temperature or colour, and the highlights are all blown out as though every surface were wet. Try doing some studies on form and light and really analyze it, then try to apply it in your pieces without ref.
