    Random Concept Sketches/Studies

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on here for quite a while but didn't feel ready to post anything because I kinda sucked at painting and only just getting comfortable with the (digital) medium, The majority of my sketches are just line work and the subjects are random.

    Some colour studies.

    Two rare still lifes.

    Environments.

    Will post some more soon.

    3rd slot.

(Below)I like to printscreen as I go along so I don't forget the technique I used.
Jeremy Vickery's Practical light and colour dvd from Gnomon and Johnnie Liliedahl's Illumination colour series were very helpful.

hey man, great work in here!! if i were you, i would focus on getting your values down a bit more before jumping into color. it makes it harder to define your values whn working from color alone. i dont know if you know Feng Zhu, but he has alot of really awesome free video tutorials, much like the Gnomon videos, but there totally free. he adds new ones all the time too, and i learnd alot from them. i would start with the first video and work your way through them to the newer ones. hes very insightful, and makes it seem alot easier to tackle tough images. i hope this helps at all, but i love your line work. you just need some more practice on the painting side (dont we all). but heres that link, definately chck them out!!!

@NickyBeats: Thanks for the input. I kinda like experimenting with the empressionists style when it comes to painting and working in colour, like exaggerating the colours of the shadows just to see the effects but what you said about the values is correct I should work on it some more. I'm very comfortable with line and need to break out of my comfort zone.

I'm up to date with Feng zhu's youtube videos and think they're great, should probably start practicing his lessons.

    Thanks peeps.

Next I think I'll do some black and white value and form studies on these alien type creatures, they're fun to do.

Haven't been on the tablet for a few days been really busy.

Apart from the 1st image the rest are done with bic fine and paper taken with phone cam.

Here onwards are just aliens, creatures and robots and other stuff applying Scott and Fengs drawthrough technique.

Hopefully I'll get back on my tablet soon.

Thanks Nick, with the drawthrough stuff I 1st put the surface middle line then anchor the cross sections depending on it's tilt into perspective for the symmetry.

I always thought this technique could only be used on products and machinery because it's quite technical.

With organic shapes it looks right even if it's not accurate.

Two bug-floating characters done earlier, don't really know where I was going with these but they were fun to do.

Cheers for the comment Fantastic dynamic shapes you have here for your characters and vehicles. Out of curiosity did you or are you currently studying industrial design?

Some of your sketches have that sort of feel which I know a few of my mates where in.

    Keep at it!

Some suggestions for complex forms is for the intricate detail, think of them as simple shapes (this will especially help for more organic models which have odd planes)

Your recent bug creature, I can see in your colouring you laid out the basic shading in three spherical forms, but now I suggest going in with that mind set for smaller details such as the thorax could be shaded as if it was a cube and such.

    Thanks for the feedback Allan-P.

Yes I studied Industrial Design at Coventry but I learnt how to draw from studying comicbook artwork and from art books. To be honest I learned much more about drawing from studying Scott Robertson and Feng Zhu's dvd's than I did from uni, those dvd's are like a course in itself.

I'm a lazy sketcher and kinda back out from doing any detailed rendering lol.

Hey man! Thanks for the comment. Man I can't see anything wrongwith what you're doing
here. Of course there's room for improvement (aint that the life of an artist ), but all the studies you've done and the breadth of techniques you're covering seem to be
setting you on the right track. Keep going where you're going! Can't wait to see where
    it takes you!!
