    new environment concept/matte painting

    Hey guys.
I'm currently working on this environment concept art piece. I may turn it into a matte painting if I time but i would really love your feedback

The story behind it is that god has cast out some angels who have betrayed him and now they are set in stone on a distant planet where their wings have been transformed by the demonic inhabitants into a solar panel that will provide energy to thir subterrainian city.

The first image is just a rough doodle. Im trying to find a good composition and give the scene a memorable sillouette.

The second image is some rough thumbs on the angels themselves. Ive played around with the wings trying to turn them into some sort of intergalatic solar panel or wind farm. looked at the image of the space jockey from alien as inspiration for the design.

maybe try to make it like rows of those angels so it looks like a graveyard of them. Your anatomy and proportions are off, work on that. The head is too big for the rest of the body and lower body is of a midget. Erase the outline around those 2 moons/planets. Make foreground much darker but not 100% black.

Crazy sounding concept. Add some more angels. That will give the central idea more emphasis. I also suggest spending a bit of time gathering reference. That will help you alot. You also might try using bits and pieces (cut, paste and transform style) from actual photos, at least for fleshing out the rough concept.

In a environment like this you have to create convincing scale and depth. Employ some aerial perspective and alternate tones (light/dark/light, etc.) between foreground and bg. These two techniques make a huge difference in selling the illusion.
