    ROUND #198, revoltingly expensive

    topic:

    ROUND#198, revoltingly expensive

This week I want everybody to get dirty, ugly, grotesque, vile, and all around unappealing in their design. Create a creature that has a visualy disgusting presence about it. Make the viewer hope that they never come across one of these critters just because they are so offensive to look at.

There's one catch though. This unfortunately ugly fellow must have something in its anatomy that is extremely valueable. For example... its teeth are made of diamonds, it pisses the best smelling perfume in the universe, it shits gold, or it can produce or be made up of something we've never heard of before. Its up to you, but the part that is valueable must be apparent in your image. Get creative! Show us the true value of being ugly!

    Deadline:

    DEC. 15th 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...65#post2947565

Killer concept indeed! It's a very busy week for me, but I hope I can find the time to participate. In any case, I'm looking forward to seeing the final entries.

Agreeing on the awesomeness of this idea. Might want to knock that typo out of the title though. "Revolvingly Expensive" makes me think of a tornado made of diamonds or something.

    Cow

after 2 hours of work, here is what i have so far, i already thought of the story for this creature, but now im too lazy to write it, so for now, lets just say its some kind of toadspider (there is nothing more disgustin than toads and spiders), and inside of it, there is a big golden ball growing.

    here it is:

    here's a quick sketch.
the design is not really thought through, but I was thinking that the expensive part of a creature could be high quality oil it was producing.
otherwise you wouldn't really want to get close to a critter this smeary.

Just remember that the valuable part of the beast must be apparent. Meaning we have to see the golden ball. (I'm sure a cross-section would be just fine.) And since you already have the idea of crossing a spider over with a toad, you may want to think about studying images of both. What do you find disgusting about a spider? What details from the toad do you want to add to your creature?

You may want to get a pencil and paper just to sketch out some ideas before you really get in deep.

Ewwwww, gross! I like getting my hands dirty. Lets see how foul I can get. The valuable part is interesting. Value can be very subjective.

Not really in love with the design yet, but I wanted to practice a bit. The concept is a genetically engineered beast that grows human eyeballs between its skin flaps. A person can pop one in their empty eye socket and they're good to go... at least for a week or so. The eyeballs have a short shelf-life.

Besides the gift of superior sight, the eyeballs have low memetic qualities. They are considered highly valuable.

Hey guys! I've been doing some research, I think i may base my creature off of the rare earth elements, like Yttrium, Scandium and Lanthanum. Not sure yet. My-minds-a-thinkin.

Here's a wip. Im going on vacation tomorrow which may or may not mean i'll be able to finish this up, but here's what i got so far. I'm thinking it might drool gold or silver or something and be a sort of "fire based" sort of creature. We'll see how it goes.

Good start. No doubt about what's expensive.

    Nice creature.

Great idea with the oil producing creature. I like the way it shakes its head and the oil spatter.

Eyeballs and genetic engineering. If you render it out it will bee really revolting.

skullbeast - It's a nice start. I feel like the design could be pushed a little more. Maybe all it needs is a few more legs or something. Really get those gems shiny and really try and make it even grosser.
Xeinnex - You're going to have to make that golden ball evident in some way. Right now you have very uniform values throughout the creature, try and push those to create a dynamic lighting situation. That will give us a better idea of it's form.
monotony - Great design. The oil is a great idea. I feel like the head could be pushed to be even grosser. Right now it has the cute qualities of a salamader or a gecko, but it was less identifiable with creatures we know, it would seem a lot grosser.
mobius-9 - I'm really digging 2 through 4, of those designs. Maybe make a second mock-up of each design to yourself, and us, a better idea of each design? I'm leaning most towards 4 at the moment, but I feel like all 3 could work.
Wiggen - Right now you're breaking rule #1e (see above). Define the creature's anatomy a little more. It's a great idea, though.
ArtZealot - Fire-based and drooling metal sounds good, but the firey palette tends to have an instantaneously beautiful quality, so try and push the palette to be as ugly as possible within that. Maybe it's skin is a sickly brownish-green to contrast the bright warm hues?
JanJager - Awesome start. I'd recommend removing the pupils to make it more revolting. What valuable substance does it produce, I wonder?

Here's the land whale in all it's blubbery glory. The milk it produces is extremely nutritious, full of nutrients and quite delicious, albeit very fattening. In the arctic where it lives this milk can mean the difference as any food is extremely scarce.

Just a quick shading pass for y'all.

Missed the previous COW, but here's my concept for this weeks creature.

It forms diamonds in it's pimples which, once formed, pops the zit and rockets out. mmmm...zit diamonds.

Thanks for reminding me, guys. I think I like this direction better anyway. What I really want are these giant skin folds so the eyes can hide underneath. Some of the folds will be pinned back in the final.
