it would be helpful to me just to hear what pencils everyone used in pencil drawings. For instance, do u start with a 3h, fill in with an HB, outline with 3b, etc. I like the way some of the sketches look here, and my pencil drawings always look to bland and like all the same value. Anyone? Thank you.
Depends, if I am going for pure line art I use H but if I am doing life drawing I use 2b.
I should just test the line and see what fits you.
I use a similar method to Lockwood when drawing. The only difference is, I have a Koh-I-Nor 2850c electric eraser, but I find myself using the smaller ones since they're easier to manage -- The 2850c is huge.
Other then that I'm a simple single-lead-mechanical-pencil type of guy too.
His pencil technique is well said, so check it out here...
Todd Lockwood's Q&A
i dont use an electric eraser... i do hear good things though. I mainly just use a putty rubber (i think the blue soft steidler one)
i use a 2b mechanical "claw-grip" pencil to sketch with, then a F or HB rotring 0.3 mechanical pencil..... the grip pencil i find useful because it has a large lead which you can file to shade large areas at once (great when getting down blocks of tone) or sharpen to get a nice, thin, dark line.
im going to make a thread somewhere so we can all write down the stuff we use and what we use it for.... (e.g i used to use turpentine and oil pastels and an old cloth to sketch with.)
you can get interesting results if you experiment..... with pencils though i wouldnt use a variety of leads. Because the black that you get from say a 4b is obviously never going to be the same as a 2H... I find that using too many always ruins things...
oh yeah get yourself a blue lead pencil to sketchwith coz if you are scanning alot its hella useful!!!
more coffee = better work
It is not just pencil. Paper is very imporant, and his relation with pencil. I use pinion for cleaning paper from rubber worms.
danilo got a very valid point.
i recently bought a different brand of sketch pad because my local store didn't have the one i searched for and i needed one quickly.
on the old one -with moderate grain- i sketched with a mechanical b pencil. the new one is quite heavy grain for pencil drawing and i have to use my 3h for sketching (!) and it has a rub-off graphite that is quite similar to the old paper and b pencil.
