    refraction's sketchbook

I've been meaning to start a sketchbook for a while.. been mostly focused on studies the past while and am going to start balancing that out with more work from imagination. Yay!

First some studies from films/photos, some of my first stabs at painting and drawing in photoshop, some messing with sculptris, and some life drawing.

I hope to have a lot more interesting work to post soon, thanks for looking!

NickyBeats - Thanks! I definitely do not feel like I'm killing it yet haha

A few more studies and some slightly older sketchbook stuff that I wanted to get in here just to document progress. The wet street study was really interesting, I was far from nailing the values there, but learned more about texture brushes and implying details.

One pose I didn't totally hate from a Dr. Sketchy night I went to.. the model was wearing a marge simpson wig And then a study of Frazetta! Going to have to work on putting it all together more..

Some life drawings, and something I was screwing around with without a plan or getting anything working at the early stage

Nice start. I think on the digital paintings it would be better to start painting at a higher opacity first to quickly block everything in, then you can go in and refine at a lower opacity. It is a quicker method and gives better results with depicting the forms.

Your tonal gestures are quite lovely! I think you have started to develop a distinct style in your characters too, just be careful not to lose a "realistic" (what is realistic anyway?) essence to your characters poses.

Oh, and nice capture of color in your movie paintings!

Andrew Sonea - Thanks! And good point, thank you. I've been feeling that I need to be more 'heavy handed', and I will try to block in better earlier on!

kiwigarbage - Thank you! There are some really talented people at my life drawing session who give great advice And true, I haven't been getting a good pose gesture working early on, always going to the next stage too fast. Thanks for the reminder!

Just a few studies for now.. On holidays and it's been non stop until just recently. I got to hang out with Android Jones (and Phaedra) briefly this weekend.. They were super nice people!

This sketchbook should get some decent original work soon.. It'll be a christmas miracle!

    1. Generic 3d dude I made to start going through the whole modeling/texturing/normal mapping etc pipeline.

    2. Photo ref study

3 & 4. Just some quick 'life drawings' from some assorted pics from google.

jNeumann - Thanks! A lot of partially finished studies lately.. hasn't been anything update update worthy

A few pages from life drawing today.. it was a rough sesh, just couldn't get into the groove. Probably shouldn't slam energy drinks right before I go.

Some life drawing from this week.

I really needed this session, I've been sliding a bit with drawing since I've mostly been learning about 3d texturing which I'm terrible at, and getting back into ZBrush..

I'm going to try to make the time to do more of everything!

More life-drawings. Really needed today's sesh, just needed to zen out and draw for 3 hours because I haven't been getting much done all week. Made me feel way better!

Mila - Thanks! Haven't been doing too much painting lately, trying to focus on just modeling for right now

A generic girl model I was working on, I keep adding horns on everything because I hate the whole bald-model look Will probably give her a little outfit and call it done soon..

I've also started doing some semi-regular speed-sculpting seshes with my roomate! Topics so far were "post apocalyptic mutants" and a vampire/"creature of the night".

And the last study from photo I had done a while ago..

Been too long.. Some recent sketchbook pages, these always feel like I'm just shaking off the rust, making sketch time a daily habit so I can get some momentum going. Oh also my first page of "visualization exercises" from my Bobby Chiu workshop booklet.

Been learning up on 3d environment art, Going to have some time in the new year to get on top of it and get a lot of portfolio work done. The street scene here is all wrong, and nothing was built to any kind of scale or standard units which is how things should be done if they're going to be used in a game.

    TCrow - Thank you!
htkpeh - Thanks man, appreciate it. Your SB has a lot of fun stuff going on
Alrap - Do you mean the gesture drawings? They're the funnest ones for me..

I think this post got eaten by the site first time around..

Quick update, still been working on 3d game art stuff mostly, lots of technical stuff and less artistic stuff.. but I'm sure it'll pay off

    - Goblin guy from above retopo'd and into Marmoset to show that he could be in a game.

    - Sketches and bobby chiu exercises.

    - Didn't even want to post this becaues it's bleah. Naked anime elf girl.. basically a warm up sketch but realized I have to get back to painting in a big way.

An idea I was messing with for this week's CHoW - "Prophet of the end times".. no more time to work on him for the deadline. I didn't do any thumbnailing or anything I should have, just dove in and started screwing around..

Selection of lifedrawings from the last while. Had some good advice given to me about needing to measure more when drawing from life.. it's showing me a lot of mistakes!
