    Art Theft of Students

hello, a friend notified me that this person is claiming work done by myself and my classmates as his own. he said he found the website from CA, which means it is possible he is an active part of this community. i am posting this as a warning to those who may have been considering hiring him for work.

the first image is a collection of our work, and the second are screencaps of the website for proof.

Wow, talk about a small world. I came across the guy's website and portfolio literally a day ago when viewing the EoW entries for this week.

Here is the guy's username on CA.org. I actually thought to myself, when perusing his portfolio website, that the quality and style differences were a bit haphazard. Guess I know why now.

    Send a C&D letter.

If he ignores that, post that information on every art forum you and your fellows can find.

As soon as I saw the first image on his page I knew he'd also stolen from Daryl Mandryk:

He left his resume on his site. It looks like he's held a few jobs with his fake portfolio.

contacted him on facebook asking him to remove all images done by my school, for starters if he doesn't respond within a day or two, will send a cease and desist. will also be notifying the school if it persists even beyond that.

I heard that. We wasted all of our lynching energy last week. Maybe we should have a sticky list of piles of shit that gank other peoples work. We could call it "the hall of shit" It would be a pretty tall pile.

    Heh another one.

I noticed this piece originally made by Borkur Eiriksson in his blog. It's just with some green overlay, change of proportion and slight overlay.

Farvus, the two images are from the same person. The one with green-blueish overlay is in the section EVE of his website (and he is credited in the source page of your first link). Also even if those pieces were from two different persons I couldn't blame either of copyright infringement or anything. The two pictures only share a very similar perspective (god help us if you can copyright that) but are really two different ideas. Now I'll add that if anyone can get upset about that kind of similarities between two images (provided they had been from two different people) it should also be noted then that the same artist's work is full of CraigMullins-ery. http://www.borkurart.com/media/images/inline.jpg

The line between what is fine and what is not is really blurry and I think common sense should prevail. You can paint and use anything you want as long as credit is given where it's due. Since 2009 everytime I saved a picture in my computer I have been entering the name of the author in the name file. It helps.

I think art is a personal venture and that advancing your art is akin to advancing yourself as a person. People who "cheat" with art, whatever that means, or try to deceive others are really the fools.

I was never registered there but here's a post by Craig Mullins on Sijun back in 2006:
Get used to it, I have a rips folder that is quite hefty now.

    Check this dude out-

He posted here a while ago and when I called him on obvious plagiarism, he behaved very badly and others defended him. He has a website, and remember, ewillustration prefers Visa!

Overall this is a really difficult problem. I sometimes have to do work that looks very suspicious when divorced from context. In this case it looks like that is not true, so I would say that slimey should probably rethink his habits.

I have been accused of ripping off people who ripped me off. And overpaints open a whole new smorgasbord for those looking to stir the pot.

I think Gurney sued Lucasfilm over the obvious dinotopia rips in EP1? Or maybe I hallucinated that?

There was an old site called "rip or Homage?" or something. It had hundreds, maybe thousands of rips among comic artists. Some were egregious.

Mikko I think you were right to point it out and handled it as best you could have. Then use you time and energy elsewhere. In 20 years, everyone involved will have gotten exactly what they deserved. The rippers addiction will eventually destroy them and those with ability will be recognized.

Ok, my bad for assuming you were half-blind I guess but the image you just posted was really nowhere in your first post. Yeah that last one is obviously a paintover, the source isn't mentionned anywhere and it's for a cover art contest for Ninja Theory... I wonder why he won't submit it.

@Randis: You're right I guess a little part of me was hoping he'd back off, but have agreed to notify the school and instructors.

Thanks everyone for the advice and help, it's much appreciated :]

What i`m rather curious about is exactly how this guys expect to perform in the job their getting on account of the stolen portafolio artwork. I`m guessing the client must expect a certain standard, is like asking for a burguer and getting carboard with ketchup. And if this people can perform on that required level, why are they unable to build their own portfolio pieces?

Unless is a a plan to book a few clients, ask for money in advance and run to Tijuana with it, i dont know.

Looks like we got us another one, boys!

Man. I will never understand why people have to stoop this low to impress other people? How can they even feel satisfaction for getting credit on things that aren't even theirs!

they are basically creating art without any emotional attachments to the piece whatsoever.
If thats the case why even bother to do it. If your going to put none of yourself into it the page might as well be blank.

It worries me to think that people like this may get a professional job, and some unknowing company is going to use someones work for promotional material.

Managers can't police everything their art departments turn in. The laws need to apply to individuals and make them responsible. IT starts at schools and work places, people need to speak up and let the company know that they are at risk.
Schools now teach visual game design without learning to visualize a concept with pencil and paper first. Students use the internet to pull ideas and teachers let them.
The difference from the old days is you used to use ref to resolve your idea not use to give you the idea.
